i7 6700k Experiencing Overheat after getting SLI of 2 GTX 1080

Hey guys!

My i7 6700k, overclocked to 4.6 ghz, is experiencing a lot of overheating after I configured SLI for 2 GTX 1080s.

Do I need to reapply the thermal paste since its been awhile or do I need better cooling? I have an all-in-one CPU liquid cooler.
 
Solution
With a little thin piece of semi flexible plastic, some string, and tape/ staples you might try creating a little cool air shroud straight to the intake of your radiator from one of the front intake fans, which would shield the radiator from gtx1080 heat....

Or drop the clocks 100-200 MHz to see if that prevents thermal runaway. Or both.

Is it thermally throttling? What cooler? (Some of the smaller radiators might not keep up with sustained heavy loads; unless shooting for 144 Hz refresh, I'd drop the clocks back a tad, or the core voltage, if possible, or , get a higher capacity cooler)

it does throttle or sometimes my system becomes unstable and turns my screen black for a second. I have a Silverstone tundra TD03-E, its a single radiator with two fans pushing and pulling air out the back of the case.

I only have 4k 60 Hz monitor at the moment.
 
possibly the heat generated inside the case by a pair of 1080's is contributing. Does your case have adequate intake? Is the radiator front or top mounted? (Probably better than rear mounted, with only warm air soaking it as would-be input 'cooling' air)

My case's whole front is an intake. It has three 140mm case fans in front. I however have two 120mm ones at the top blowing air in. And the radiator is the only one blowing air out at the back.
 
I see; it is, however a smaller radiator might be suffering keeping up with the heat dissipation as the fluid reaches 60c or so, where after it loses the ability to cool effectively. I'd look for a Noctua conventional sink, they have assorted sizes for varying width cases.

I'll try getting one those air cooled heat sinks. Could I make my situation better if I rearrange my fans the radiator for now?
 
can't hurt to try experimenting with cool air input from the rear to the radiator, with an exhaust fan or two up top? Worst case, you've only wasted 30 min attempting some fan experimentation...are the tubes long enough to hang the radiator externally in ambient air, just as an experiment?

Normally at 4k, the GPUs are still limiting, see if framerates are still acceptable at 100-200 less clock speed....every 100 MHz adds ~7-10 watts of heat to dissipate...; even 100 MHz too much might overwhelm the cooling solution once coolant is warmed to 60C or so..

im down to +120 clock its still getting solid fps, heat is still an issue though but no more stuttering or black screens..
