Hey there,

I am trying my hand at overclocking my first computer and I could use some advice!

I am using Intel Extreme Tuning Utility and Cpuid CPU-Z for the management and stress tests.

No matter what voltage I adjust to (starting at default and never going over 1.2), the core temperature rises to the 80's if I set the multipliers at 4.2 or above.

One thing I noticed that seemed a lot different than youtube videos I've been watching is that whenever I switch the voltage to "static," the computer crashes and reboots.

Any advice would be great!

Specs and components:
i7 6700K 4.0GHz
Hyper 212 evo air cooler
GTX 960 4GB
MSI Computer ATX DDR4 Motherboard Z170A PC MATE
8GB ddr4 RAM
Supernova 650W power supply
Windows 10 64 bit

Solution
You want advice? Stop using the Extreme tuning utility, and configure your overclock in the bios. All the automatic utilities are junk and the end result, if you can even get a stable overclock, will tend to run hot due to the automatic nature of the utility having a tendency to run with higher voltages and unstable fluctuations. Uninstall ETU and do everything from the bios the way it's intended to be done.

Also, don't expect too much out of that...

Also, don't expect too much out of that PCmate board. It's pretty much the bottom of the barrel when it comes to every generation of each chipset. Personally, I probably wouldn't even bother trying to overclock on that board. The stock turbo speed is probably higher than you can reliably configure a full time overclock anyhow on that board.

Solution
Contrary to the other answer, I have PC MATE motherboard as well, and found a stable 4.7ghz overclock for the 6700k.

Configuring in the bios alone was pretty poor, though. I did use the bios to set the voltage to my desired value, because if you overclock and leave it on auto the voltage will spike to unsafe values. I'm current using a 1.3700v bios setting and using the extreme tuning utility to set my clock speeds.

I used it to tweak per-core values to 4.8, 4.7, 4.7, 4.6 and cache of 4.5. I found the 4th core incapable of reaching a stable 4.7 even if the second and third cores were at 4.6.

It may seem like a strange set up, but it benches several percent higher than a 4.7 all-round speed, and at significantly lower voltages and therefore temperatures.

It's up to you if you wish to increase the voltage, but the general opinion is that 1.4 should be the absolute limit for the average overclocker.

EDIT: This was using a budget liquid cooler, carefully monitor your temperatures and see that it never reaches above 80c, or whatever amount lower that you're comfortable with.

You are a clear sample of one. Considering the hundreds of problems I've seen using the PC Mate boards since that series was begun, I don't find your success to be demonstrative of the PC Mate board being of suitable quality or capability for overclocking.
