Hi,
I've read the Intel CPU temp sticky but still am not 100% sure I've got a good sense for whether my temps are reasonable. I recently swapped out a Fractal Design S case for a Lian Li standing desk with a CPU case (the DK-04 in case you care). I was in a rush because I have two young kids and very little free time for geekery and stupidly, idiotically, ridiculously, didn't clear off and reapply clean thermal paste after the swap and also (!!!!) arranged both fans on my H80i v2 pointed toward the radiator. So, surprise, the CPU burnt out after a few days of non-heavy use. Now I'm ultra paranoid about CPU temps, after having replaced it. Here's my build in case you're curious. I built it primarily for use as a machine for training neural networks (I'm a machine learning engineer at a big silicon valley company whose name you've probably used as a verb today).
I did some video ripping/encoding of an old wedding video BluRay to test out stressing the CPU a bit and when all cores were at or around 100% it peaked out at 68 degrees C. (Prior to fixing the cooling it was peaking in the high 80s!). I've seen a lot of people with idle temps below 30 C, but mine hovers around 40 C consistently. Below is a screenshot of the various components in the case and their temperatures etc. I'm not overclocking (at least not intentionally) but the CPU is more or less always running at 4 GHz. Also weird to me that the core temps are always a good deal lower temp than the package temp.
There's plenty of air flow -- there are 7 fans running in the case, four pulling in air from the front (2 of which includes the radiator and its fans pulling in air), and three pushing air out the back with about 6 inches of space. When I hold my hand over the back fans, cool air is being blown out. Below the temps image is an image of the case, so you can see there's plenty of space and good air flow. Ambient temp is around 74-76 F (23-26 C).
Sorry for the length. But the question is basically: is 40 C a reasonable baseline temp with this setup? And is 68 C at peak during around an hour of video encoding worrisome? The temp typically hovered around 63-65 C, only briefly peaking at 68.
Thanks!
Dave
