Hi guys I currently have an i5 4690k with a gtx 1060 (6gb) with 8gb of ram.

I was going to upgrade my whole system to a 8th/9th gen i5 with 16gb of ram.

My friend has offered me his second hand I7 7700k for around £250 along with mobo and ram. which means I can sell the rest of my system along with gpu and potentially upgrade to a gtx 1070 aswell

Do you think I'm better to get the latest 6 core generation Cpu. (that's what in my budget) Or go with the older I7 (4c 8t) and a gpu upgrade

I want to future proof myself for aslong as I can and I don't mind upgrading in stages

Thanks

I would definitely go with the i7, it generally performs better in gaming, if that’s what you will be doing”. If your not using it for gaming and using it for something like coding definitely go with the i9 to get the extra cores.

The gtx 1060 is good for 1080p 60fps gaming. If you have plans on getting a 144hz monitor, you need both, a better cpu and gpu to push those fps.

That being said, it's better to have the 9600k in a z370/390 mobo.

If you can get the 9600k/z390, that platform will last you a long while just like the 4690k did till now. The 7700k/z270 is already dead with no upgrade paths. Not to mention that the 9600k can oc to 5.0ghz which can take care of 144hz gaming just fine.

Personally wouldn’t upgrade to a 1070 from a 1060 now. Seems a little pointless when A 1070Ti offers much better performance and 1080’s are cheaper and 2070s are in the mix for those who will die if the entirety of 2019 is not rendered with ray tracing.
