I just had a potentially radical idea of "upgrading" my i7-920 build to a i7-870. Instead of giving my partner an AMD build for around 550 dollars, I would give him most of my old i7 920 and I would use the 550 toward an i7-870 build. I want the sata 6.0.
Here is my i7-920
CM 690
i7 920 2.66 Ghz
Corsair TX CMPSU-750TX ATX12V & EPS12V
Asus P6t Deluxe V2
G. Skill 6gb DDR3 1600
EVGA Geforce GTX 285 1GB 512-bit GDDR3
2 Western Digital Caviar Black WD6401AALS 640GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s
LG Black 22x 2MB Cache SATA 22x DVD±R DVD Burner - OEM
Noctua NH-U12P SE1366 120mm SSO CPU Cooler
scythe s-flex fans for case
Vista home premium OEM
I think cost was about 1,641 dollars
What I would keep, for my i7-870
Corsair TX CMPSU-750TX ATX12V & EPS12V
EVGA Geforce GTX 285 1GB 512-bit GDDR3
1 Western Digital Caviar Black WD6401AALS 640GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s
LG Black 22x 2MB Cache SATA 22x DVD±R DVD Burner - OEM
scythe s-flex fans for case
What I would buy for my build
CM 690 II advance
i7-870
G. Skill RAM either 4 or 8 GB
Noctua NH-U12P SE2 120mm SSO CPU Cooler
SATA hard drive 6.0Gb/s (either 640gb-1tb)
cost estimate is around 619
Then I need a motherboard with sata 6.0 and usb 3.0
if cost is around 180 for mobo, total cost would be around 800 dollars (excluding win7)
Then I just need a PSU and cheap video card for the i7-920 system
If cost would be around 110 for those, then the difference in upgrade cost would only be about 360 dollars.
1) Is this doable and reasonable? I don't mind spending the 360. And sandy bridge would be too expensive for this "swap"
2) I need help with finding:
reliable 1156 mobo
reliable sata 6.0 hard drive that is quiet (but no caviar green or blue)
g. skill ram (both 4gb and 8gb (I can't decide which I want - I'm a heavy multi-tasker))
a quality PSU for the i7-920 for maybe around 50-70 dollars
a cheap video card (50-70) for the i7-920 (since he doesn't do games)
