My motherboard for the i7-8700 has failed, I am currently using my old i3-2100, h61 mobo with ddr3 ram. Is it worth selling the i7-8700 and get a good enough price for it and add it to my budget for a new platform (i3-12100F or R5-5600G). Or I can go the cheap route and buy a used (B360). I am using this for casual gaming on 1080p 60hz (mostly rpgs and rts games), watching streams and basic usage. Current specs is:

i3-2100
h61 mobo
2x8gb 1600 ddr3 rams
seasonic m12 620w bronze rated
GTX 1070
512gb NVME via PCIE adapter
3x3.5" HDD
Deepcool i70c CPU cooler

I would invest in a brand new platform, one with the 13th Gen in mind or an AM5 platform.

Could you elaborate on the apps, games and content you tax the existing(or the i7-8700) system with?

What motherboard were you working with? Perhaps you could try and reflash the BIOS on the board in hopes of reviving it?

your issues are going to be if you replace the mobo ( which you should if budget permits ) youre up for mobo ram and cpu ..

If your gtx 1070 is still going strong a 5600g ( as the 1070 i think is still better than the 5600g igpu ) is pointless better off with a AM4 board 5600x/5600 or 3600 could be another option
..
on the Intel side a b660 with a 12100f will give you options of later Intel cpus like the 13th and 14th ..

another option is go the b660 a 12400f then look at updating the 1070 later on

normally i jump straight to and say a AM5 platform but ( and i cant believe im saying this ) if budget is super tight a decent b660 LGA1700 then the 12th gen will give you up to 14th gen options at a cheaper price !!

AM5 with ddr5 and even the basic of basic 7600 non x can be pricey !!

I was thinkingnof getting a cheap i5-2500 and start from there. Sell my proc (i7-8700) and add it for a new i3-12100 platform.

My mobo is beyond repair it was a hardware issue.
