I7 920 cpu temps high

Hi,

Not long ago I decided to replace the thermal paste on my I7 920 heatsink, with the artic silver paste in hope of reducing the temps. Sadly the cpu became hotter (idle: 50-55, when playing demanding games it can reach 70 degrees, but it usually stays in the mid 60's), so I made sure that the fan was placed properly and reapplied the paste several times. It is overclocked but I haven't increased the voltage and hyperthreading is disabled.

Before I applied the thermal paste the cpu had an idle temp of 40-45, not sure what is was under load but it was probably lower as well.
My suspicion is, that the the heatsink/fan is not working as it should, it's the stock I7 cooler btw.
So does anyone think that might be the problem?

I'm sure it has nothing to do with airflow or ambient temp (it's 28-30 usually when idling), and my Gigabyte 560 ti runs with 28-32 degrees idle.

I have also noticed that the cpu's AUX temp is 80 when idling.

my 920 ran at those temps also, it runs hot. Try disabling smartfan control in the bios to max out the fan speed. I had to replace my cooler in the end. I got the corsair h50 when it came out.

Okay, maybe I should just buy a new cooler, but the cpu was earlier capable of running cooler, theres no dust in there either so I just don't know what could be causing it.

If your using the same fan only a couple/few things could have happened. You might have put too much or too little thermal paste on. It's also possible that all the anchors aren't completely attached to the back of the motherboard. Those stock fans can be a pain in the arse to instal properly sometimes.

is it hotter in the room than it was previously? I know my temps sky rocketed in summer. Double check the heatsink is properly attached, disable the smart fan in the bios and re-check temps, if its acceptable great, if not its time for a new cooler. The stock heatsinks are junk

Yea it's pretty hot, but my motherboard/system temp is at 31-32 degrees, while my cpu now stays in the mid 50's (56/57 for the hottest core) and this is with my case's side panel taken off. I've also removed the heatsink, the thermal paste had made contact both on the cpu and heatsink and I'm fairly certain it's not too much nor too little (the blob was the size of a pea, when I applied it). And finally I'm sure the the heatsink is fastened properly.
