I have been trying to get the most out of my computer before getting a new one but have been having so much fun upgradeing and now OC'ing, I don't think I'll every buy a pre-made system ever again. That being said, the first time I've ever attempted to OC was yesterday...I'd really like it if someone would read my setup and point out any obvious mistakes I'm making before my system blows up in my face.

I have a Asus P6T mb
9 GB 1066 DDR 3 Ram
2 x Nvidia Geforce GTX 285's
Intel Core i7 920
800 watt power supply

I just recently upgraded the C:/ to an SSD, Purchased a new full size tower case (and moved everything - THAT was fun!), installed a Corsair H80i Liquid cooler, and used the old fans from my old case in addition to the new case's fans for extra cooling.

I read about 8-10 articles on oc and decided to go for it.
My OC is as follows:

BCLK = 177
Mem Clock is set to 1067
CPU voltage = 1.250

For 5 hours I ran Prime95's Stress test running at 3.54 Ghz with no problems.

My cpu(s) temp during the stress test was between 60 and 66 C.

Games like Far Cry 3 are still a little laggy (no worse than before) and I'm wondering if its because I'm missing something about the oc or if my GPU needs an update.

Thanks in advance for any help or advice you can provide!

The overclock looks good. If you get any instability just up the core and IMC voltage a bit.

You can probably push your overclock a bit further although watch your ram overclocking. For Prime 95 even 70-75 degrees is alright (Keep in mind that Prime 95 is going to test your CPU a lot more than any real world tasks/ games).

I'm guessing you have a bit of a GPU bottleneck (if you were having a problem with your CPU it would probably just lock up or blue screen on you). I'm running an i5-760 @ 3.8 with a Geforce 570 and Far Cry/ other new games are pretty smooth as long as I turn some things down.

So should I take the oc down a little then?
I know I only have 2.0, but should I consider a 600 series card? I don't know anything about the release date on the 700's... does anyone?
I guess I can always set my PhysX to use my CPU only - any other settings to eek a little more out of my 2 old SLI cards?

also, I don't quite understand the ram part of overclocking - especially the 8-8-8-24 numbers I have seen - I have no idea what that is (except that I've read it's called clocking)
Can I really get to 4 Ghz with my ram at 1066?

It would be better to wait for 2 or 4 week & get the GTX700, if you are in hurray pick a GTX600 one

I'm so sorry to repost, especially if I'm just asking stupid questions here (and thank you SO MUCH for your help so far - this forum really is amazing!), but I REALLY want to wrap my head around the 1066, 1333, 1600, etc. I have 1066 on my ram - can I really get up to 4.0 Ghz with it? How do the ram numbers effect overclocking?

Here you are a full explanation for how to overclock you CPU to reach the mentioned clocks

http://www.overclock.net/t/538439/guide-to-overclocking-the-core-i7-920-or-930-to-4-0ghz

Also, I think it's better to get 1600 RAM, it's not expensive these days. It will enahnce the system performance generally & will give a good advantage for higher clocks for your CPU but it's still doable using the current RAM "1066" if you unlocked the RAM from the base CPU clock. I know my words seems like logarithm but if you read the thread you will understand it more.
