Hi, my new build with an i7 8700 is either constantly spiking from 790mhz to almost 5000mhz, or it's just constantly over 4000mhz. What's making me nervous is that in both situations, the computer is idle. Please help

Solution
If set in Balanced power mode, it should jump around from 800 MHz to as high as 4.2 GHz, and, you might see an occasional spike to as high as 4.6 GHz (peak single core turbo) as various tasks start/stop within basic WIndows, especially if assorted updates start /stop, or with heavy mouse movement, etc....(The 8700K will be 100 MHz faster in turbo mode, and a few hundred MHz faster in all core clocks...)

If you run a simple Defender scan, it should ramp ujp and down several times per second for the duration of the scan, and, sit mostly at 800-1200 MHz with no real activity, browsers closed, etc...(even rapid mouse movement will ramp up clock speeds)

IN summary--perfectly normal! (you may monitor HWMonitor to see clock speeds/temps on...
