So I'm a bit confused. I'm a bit of an amateur when t comes to pc parts but trying to get better. But I'm looking to get upgrade to the 9900k coming from the 6700k. I was using the MSI Gaming M7 motherboard which supports LGA 1151 which supports the Z170 Express chipset (I'm a bit confused about the diff between the two. Software vs hardware?). The 9900k is built for the FCLGA1151 but I've seen forums saying that it doesn't support the z170 chipset. So I'm a bit confused. Can someone please elaborate? Would I have to buy a new motherboard or not? I'm a 3D animator so I'm not looking to optimize for gaming; going too be doing a lot of rendering.

No. That CPU can only be used with a Z370 board that has had the bios updated, or a Z390 board. Socket is the same but implementation, pinout and chipset are different.
No, they will not work just because they fit. You CAN put a 9th gen CPU in a Z170 socket, but it is not going to work and you are probably doing to damage something. That is terribly mistaken advice. Do not put an 8th or 9th gen CPU in a 6th or 7th gen 1151 socket motherboard, being Z170 or Z270 (Also H170 and varioius others) and do not put a 6th or 7th gen CPU in an 8th or 9th gen chipset motherboard.
