I recently purchased this drive and I'm very happy with its performance. But its supposed to be 46.1 gigs formatted and I'm only getting 43 gigs total. The drive was partitioned with partition magic and for some reason isn't showing up right. Should I be alarmed that its showing up smaller?
Cause 3 gigs is a lot when you need every meg of space possible.
And also is there away to expand the size if I simply partitioned wrong and not loose my data?

its just a simple cheat HD manufactures use. They use
1 gigabyte = 1 billion bytes, 1,000,000,000
Software and your operating system use
1 gigabyte = 2^30 = 1073741824 bytes/

So, 46.1 GB (by manufacturers label) is only 42.934 GB as far as your OS is concerned.
Different labeling thats all, its just confusing because they call it the same thing:)

So don't worry, everything is working perfectly for you:)

alright thanks for your help I was just a little worried because I have a Maxtor 13.6 gig hard drive that shows up as 14.2 gigs. But I'll go with your word. I plan on getting another identical drive and trying some RAID stuff so then I'll have plenty of space.

Thanks again
