Hey people,

Your advice has proven very helpful before so I thought I would come back to you for some more.

I'm looking for an ideal replacement for the i7 4770k and a decent board to go with it, now I am not a hard-core gamer. I play games like the Total War series so I won't need something OTT.

I have a msi gtx970 4gb gpu.

I look forward to your reccomendations

I believe you should post your complete specs at the moment.

Depending on the games you could only update your GPU and maybe add more ram (from 8GB to 16GB maybe).

I'm using a I74790K stock with 16GB 1600mhz with SSD and i don't feel CPU bound. Just sold my 1060 6GB and i'm looking for a 1070/RX56 or maybe 2060 later...

For now, i believe you could get more bang for your buck by just replacing your GPU. Have you overclocked your CPU? Maybe you can get a 4790k also.
The i7 4770k is still a very good gaming CPU, you will have to go with i7-8700K or AMD Ryzen 7 2700X.

Besides the motherboard and CPU, DDR4 RAM will be required.
Do you have a budget in mind?
Are you keeping the GTX 970?
Which PSU model do you have?

I don't think you need an upgrade at all (you're not a hard-core gamer).

You didn't list the amount of RAM you have. If you're running 8gb you could upgrade to 16.

If you do have the "itch" to upgrade something, I would choose the GPU. You CPU is still capable of handling a faster one.
