IDK what You Tube is doing (Edge)

I have had this strange issue for a minute with You Tube on my "main" gaming PC in Edge. Very weird.

If I open YT and scroll down the page just a bit (and stop) my CPU usage goes very high and temps climb up to the mid 50's. If I click a video it will stop. If I try to open Task Manager to see what is going on, it stops. If I scroll the page it will stop until I stop scrolling and then it resumes again. I can leave YT up, and go to another tab and most of the time the increased usage will stop.

What is YT working so hard at?

In the performance tab for Edge I have continue running the background and efficiency mode off/gaming mode on. Probably wouldn't even have noticed aside from the fans ramping up and the temp indicator on my motherboard. No other issues, no performance problems or anything, just sort of WTH?

Edit- would "startup boost" do this?

As name implies, its meant to just help Edge startup faster - https://techcommunity.microsoft.com/t5/articles/startup-boost-faq/m-p/1810423

I can't seem to duplicate the behaviour just by opening edge. (I can do without it asking if I want to make it default every time I open it though. No already. )

Do you have latest version of Edge? It updated while I was using it.

thinks Bingchat would be better aimed at some one else.

I guess I might explain a bit for background.

Prior to my current configuration I have long had the habit of turning off or uninstalling almost everything that wasn't required for proper operation. This build has the power to accommodate more of the bells and whistles available in W11, so I have left a good bit of certain features on in order to check out what it does, performs like, etc.

I am familiar with startup boost basically being a "prefetch" as it were, and is really the only thing I can figure would cause this. If I scroll down and it's "fetching" a half dozen plus video feeds, it would make sense, otherwise...I am stumped.

I DO leave all the chat nonsense off, don't use Cortana, and even still try to limit background usage for most of the apps.

Everything on this particular PC is as current as it gets. I keep everything updated and on this specific machine even try the previews and such so that I know about issues prior to updating the PC I work with. I don't need things (such as) the recent printer issue after update while I am trying to earn a living.

Startup, in the context of Edge Startup boost, only applies to Edge. Its similar to the Chrome function that always runs in background and lets you start up the browser faster. That is all it does. It isn't tied into startup of the pc.

Startup boost keeps the browser running in the background with minimal processes when the browser is closed, which has a limited impact on device resource usage. Startup boost does not add any additional resources when browser windows are already open.

Can turn it off and see if it makes any difference.

If the only site you notice it on, is Youtube... it could be it fetching the info of the videos on the page you are on. I tried to replicate, both CPU & temps spike going onto YT page and scrolling around, but not to dramatic proportions

And remember that you can use also use Resource Monitor and Process Explorer (use both but only one at a time) to observe system performance.

Observe with Startup Boost off then on.

Objective being to determine what the system is doing or trying to do when CPU usage etc. start going astry when Startup Boost is active.

Could be triggering something else: Check Task Scheduler.

Any time I went off tab to try and check or look at anything else, the process stops. I have not noted it again since disabling that setting.
