@Hemel
I was too slow to comment... but no, not really dude. If it was about "holding the biggest share of users on the browser market" to promote an OS, then why are browsers like Opera trying to stay competitive? Mozilla's not trying to promote an OS... I know Chrome can make the browser war seem to relate to the OS more than it really does, but you have to take into consideration that you can install Safari in Windows. It was always about advertising revenue, and still is.

fulle:

Don't take my post out of context like i said the information was valid in 1995 but cant be proven right now.
Also i also wrote that i don't believe its entirely correct since you need the game studios to develop for your platform thus replacing browsers with games i this theory.

However you are right there is revenue generated from the default search engine.
This does not take away the fact all be it possible secondary to the revenue that if users go the alternative way they might chose another operating system that support the same applications that they are running today on their windows machine.

I always do Custom Installs with my programs - I didn't even *know* this was the default behavior of an IE8 install.

I don't really fault Microsoft much on the issue though - Express installs are supposed to be as simple of installs as possible, with the fewest questions asked as possible. Now if the "Custom" install had done this too, then it'd be a bit more aggravating.

I think it is a big deal for when I set up a system for my technology-challenged mother is shown how to update her system and then doesn't realize IE changed her default browser.

Sure, to us Tom-ites, its simple. My question to you all would be how do you recognize good gold and silver antique jewelry in a second hand store, and how do you clean it up so it doesn't look tarnished and old. What different types of glass and porcelain can your recognize? How do you tell a genuine Tiffany lamp from a cheap reproduction? In other words, finding valuable antiques in a pile of junk is my mom's alley - but I would NEVER let her upgrade her RAM or reinstall her OS. Thus, I think it is good that Microsoft is going to add this explicit question so I don't have to come over and "fix" her system's default browser!
