I have an old Vista laptop that I use for very little so no real need to replace it (I have a Win 10 laptop and an iPad).
I know Win 10 upgrade is not free for Vista systems, but is for Win 7 systems. If I upgraded to Win 7, would I then be eligible for the free Win 10 upgrade? Or is there a little more to it???
Of course, even just a cheap update to Win 7 might be worth it???
Thoughts?
Thanks in advance.

Nope, I've upgraded 3 machines so far from 7 to 10, without stopping by 8 on the way.

As to the OP's question, if you upgraded it to 7 (from vista) that would be a paid upgrade, so that would give you a 7 license can't see why you shouldn't get to 10 from there. BUT it may be just as cheap to buy a 10 license. And less risky.
Just because those licenses haven't bit your hand yet, doesn't mean they won't. I've seen stolen corporate licenses that worked for while and then were blacklisted, suddenly causing your system to lose it's activation and causing YOU to be out the £20 you paid for it, plus STILL have to buy a valid copy anyhow.

I've also seen copies that worked for years, until they attempted to upgrade to 10, and then not only would they not upgrade to 10, they lost the activation for 7 as well. There is only one way to avoid the potential for a problem and that is buying a legitimate copy through a legitimate reseller, not a "gray" site like G2A or any of the other shady resellers out there.

AND, further, recommending that another member do so might be cause for a rule violation as pirated is pirated, whether it works and whether you paid currency for it or not. People buy stolen cars all the time. It doesn't make them any more legal simply due to having a bill of sale.

When I searched up "Windows 7 Liscense" on google, one that was $20 was displayed. I had no idea that it could be pirated/stolen.

To the OP, you might just want to purchase Windows 10 directly, as the prices are almost identical in the 90s-100s.

This is exactly the kind of hotheaded and flaming war starting post I was talking about.

Have you even read my previous posts? Or were you simply too eager to push the issue?

I stated that there were 3 options. One of which is no longer available, one of which that required an upgrade to 7, and one of which by buying 10 directly.

The first option that is no longer available, was if you had 7 when 8 came out, you could upgrade to 8 for free for a few months. Likewise with 10, and you have until June 29 I belive to upgrade.

The second option is upgrading to 7 then getting the free Win 10 option.

The third option is purchasing Windows 10 directly.

I find it quite amusing that you once asked me "where is the flaming war/petty insults?"

If 13thmonkey wants the last word on the issue, that's fine, but I leave this thread with incredible disappointment; how even moderators do not have a sense of respect for other members, and do not know how to handle situations.

Please read the entire thread before you post silly responses like these.

Go ahead, ban me if you want, but I am simply responding to a post directed to me.

"Windows 7 license" for $20 is exactly like the guy in the Walmart parking lot, with a 'new' 70" Sony 4k TV, selling it for $60.
You would run away, screaming, right?

Or, if you found some link online, selling new 32GB DDR4 RAM for $15. Your brain says...'Nope, not a chance this is legit.'

This is no different.

captain, you appear to have missed the point that at the time that you stated that we were responding poorly to you you had only posted things that were wrong. You may have corrected them later on, but at that point in time you had only stated false information, namely 7 to 10 requires going to 8. To quote you:
No, as the only way to upgrade to 10 from 7 is to 8 then to 10, or buying a windows 10.

So that is why we told you you were wrong, because you were.

As to a 'flame war', I have taken apart your argument piece by piece, with evidence proving that most if not all of points are just wrong. That is not a flame war, that is just correcting you and stating the facts. I've not insulted you, I've not denigrated you, i've just stated where you were wrong, with evidence.

This also proves that I have read your post. As to posts between your first post accusing us and the next post accusing us, they are frankly irrelevant as no mods posted in the intervening period.

If you wish to leave this thread please do so. If you wish to complain about your treatment, please do so, I don't think i've met a single mod who has rejected advice from other mods about how we could handle things differently. Pick a random one from the mod list, i'd advise against using any that are involved in this thread. They will explain the procedures to you. I have no concern over this, the only thing that I can be pulled up for here is keeping this in an open forum. However I still believe that the OP may benefit from understanding that you are indeed wrong.

May I also ad that retail W10 is real bargain as compared to earlier versions because it's longer lasting investment as there will be no W11 or whatever for quite some time according to MS themselves. Home version is not as crippled comparing to W7 for instance and would be no different from Pro for 90% of home users.

Here's the simple answer. I have a Win 7 Ultimate laptop from 2006. However, the laptop cannot be upgraded to Win 10 as the GPU in this laptop is not up to minimum requirements. On a Vista Laptop, you're not likely to be able to upgrade to 10 for similar reasons. Unable to meet Minimum System Requirements. However, upgrading to 7 would probably be a good idea, nonetheless.

On the off chance your Lappy does meet requirements, the free upgrade to Win 10 is valid until July 3, 2016.

Hi,

Computers that are running Windows 7 are eligible for the free Windows 10 upgrade - as are computers that run Windows 8.1.

However, in order to upgrade from Vista, you'd have to buy a copy of the Windows OS that you require.

If you wanted to upgrade the Vista laptop, you'd need to backup all of the files on it, then install Windows 7 or 8.1 (assuming that drivers are available - they should be) - before finally using the Windows Update tool to upgrade from 7/8.1 to 10.
Alternatively, you could go straight to Windows 10.

However, from what I have read, you already have a computer on Windows 10. I would personally be tempted to upgrade your Vista laptop to Windows 7, if you can buy a product key for a reasonable price. I wouldn't go with 10 because (a) you already have a computer on 10, and (b) certain legacy programs that work fine on Windows 7 (or Vista) may not work on Windows 10. That's the very reason why my newest laptop is a Windows 7/10 dual boot machine, so I know that everything works fine. (That's the great thing about 2TB hard drives!)

This is all assuming that your laptop would be able to run Windows 7 (or 10), which it probably would if it can run Vista ok. As an aside, what are the specs of the laptop?

I thought that Windows 10 was more taxing on the GPU - that just about confirms it. No wonder why my games couldn't run in fullscreen mode on Windows 10, yet they were fine on windows 7!

If they post their system specs, then we'd be able to find out whether the computer would run 10 nicely, whether it would run 7 nicely, or whether it is best staying on Vista. But I think that anything that runs Vista ok should be fine on 7.

Yeah...that's the problem....even though I am runninga simple dual core Turion Tl-60 CPU, THAT still qualifies as meeting the reqs, but my ATi x1200M mobile GPU cannot sustain the needed requirements, so my laptop was denied. I was so looking forward to seeing what I could do on Win 10 Pro. The very early iterations of Win 10 Home were still too buggy for my system, but with a few upgrades upcoming, as well as upgrading my SSD (from single to dual Samsung 850 Evo 250 GB SSDs) and HDD (from WD Green 1 TB to HGST 2 TB Enterprise HDD, I will upgrade with the LATEST Win 10 Home and take flight, as it were. 😀

"Taxing" is not the issue. I've installed Windows 10 on 12 year old systems with weak, old, 12 year old integrated graphics, and it runs fine. Slow, because the system is very old, but fine. As long as you can manually track down a compatible driver or windows can find one, it will probably run if it's had any of the qualifying OS's installed previously. If it can run Windows 7, it can run Windows 10 almost certainly. Now, whether or not it can run it, and whether or not it has driver support for ALL of the hardware, is two different things.
