Directories here. Except when I am talking to no-idea people.

I don't know which I use most now. I think it just depends on the
situation. I don't really use either term much. Typing dir at a command
prompt is more common than talking about it.

I just use Adblock (in conjunction with Proxomitron 4.5). If I need
weather I use my Konfabulator widget and if I need system stats I use my
Coolmon 2 app.

I don't think I could stand a mouse gestures extension. I did make some
new cursors after 7 years of using the old ones though.

Some nice things about having them all in one html bookmark file is they
take much less slack space and if you want to edit them onto your homepage
it is much, much easier than dealing with lots of separate URL files.

Hmmm...I need to do that again. Right after I suss out this
malfunctioning laptop.

I never can remember which is which cause I'm so used to both terms.
I use both, and then only have to stop and think about it when I get a
funny look from someone who doesn't know what I'm talking about.

OK, then I'll explain the problem -- since I'm getting rather annoyed
over people thinking I shouldn't be having a problem, just cause they
say so, when I am.

When I imported them from IE, they ended up in a folder "from IE."
Ordering them alphabetically of course puts my folders all mixed up in
order with all the loose stuff. There was a "type" option which
resulted in the folders all being together, but there were a bunch of
loose ones in front of the folders, so the folders still weren't at
the top where I wanted them. (And the loose ones not alphabetical.)
When I tried to move them, there would be a horizontal line show up in
between the two places I was trying to move it (exactly how it looks
in IE), but when I'd let go of the mouse, thinking that folder would
move there, it didn't move.

So there, that's the problem. They don't move where I tell them to,
even though it looks like they should.

I had a similar problem with the bookmarks in Mozilla. But it seems
easy to me, once I got the hang of it. Just open the Manage Bookmarks
and move the stuff around on the right pane the way you like and poof!
I like all my folders at the top, like IE, then below them I have the
unclassifiable or frequently-used links alphabetized underneath the
folders.

Actually, IIRC, it's more like puzzle out - I would think to mean figure
out what's wrong and fix it if possible in this context.

Suss - I guess it is slang and perhaps comes from "suspect". It means "to
figure out". Hmmmm, yep, it's in dictionary.com already:

Just play around with the bookmark manager more. You'll figure it out.
It takes a bit of trial and error to see how it works.

I don't think anyone's saying you /shouldn't/ have a problem -- it's
just we weren't entirely clear what was going on. <:)

As we've already discussed, Firefox and AFAIK Mozilla too don't allow
'live' bookmark alterations on the menu itself the way IE does, but all
being well, you can do everything you need to via the dedicated Firefox
bookmark manager, including drag-and-drop.

If that isn't working, check you're on Firefox 1.02, which irons out
some bugs, and if it /still/ isn't working, there's always the
(admittedly rather laborious) method of editing the HTML document that
makes up your bookmarks manually.

But before you go down that route, I or one of the other Firefox users
would be willing to lend a hand if we can, I'm sure.

Version 1.02 of Firefox actually does. Maybe the earlier versions didn't.

It was the way it was said. It isn't very helpful when someone's
solution is "so organize it." Gee, thanks.

That's what I can't get to work. I'm not trying to do it on the
"live" thing. (Assuming by "live" you mean when I just open the
bookmarks rather than going into the manager.)

Actually, I'm thinking I have 1.7. OK, it is 1.02. I think it was
the "system check" I ran for work that said it didn't support 1.7.
Perhaps that's cause the system check can't even figure out which
version it is.

Well, I've stopped playing with it for the moment. I already blew my
entire vacation off my one job with this computer, and I'm just tired
of screwing with stuff. Right now I'm having a *lot* of trouble
making the online work stuff work with all this security stuff, which
is driving me batty (not to mention making it difficult to work), so
my priority right now isn't bookmarks. But thanks.

I will say my email is working perfectly, and since it's my home page,
I don't have to bookmark it.

I had already explained how to organise them.

You complained that they were not somehow organised already. This was not
logical.

It became logical when you explained afterwards that they were imported
from IE. If they were imported in such a way that they lost their
ordering, that is understandably incorrect.

However this was not the scenario that you had described at that point.
Ergo, garbage in, garbage out.

I never once complained that they came in from IE unorganized. I
merely made the point that they weren't organized the same way, and
therefore I was trying to do so. I was complaining that I couldn't do
so.

Incomprehension in, incomprehension out.

Actually... I took some of the folders I had inside "from Internet
Explorer" and moved them outside of the IE folder. Once they were
moved outside that IE folder, I was able to drag junk around any way I
wanted. And I still can't move stuff *inside* the IE folder. So I
think there's something about the imported stuff that maybe doesn't
work right?

Actually this is because Mozilla and Firefox have different version
numbers, but both claim to be Mozilla. I think there's a way to change how
the version number is reported so this could in theory be forced to work
but of course I doubt you're too worried about it now :)

I just tried this out and those imported favorites can be edited exactly
like the normal ones. Maybe you've just been moving stuff from an NTFS
drive to another NTFS drive and the permissions are screwed up? You did a
clean install to a wiped drive - how/where did you store your backups?
Entirely on CD? Or did you just move some of the stuff to another NTFS
drive?

Permissions?

Everything was on CD.

Other than curiosity, it doesn't matter anymore. I made a folder for
the loose bookmarks called ZZZ so it was last alphabetically, and
moved all the leftovers into there. And once I move stuff it seems to
be OK. And the IE folder doesn't exist anymore.

My brain is too *tired* to worry about it. 🙂

It is definitely time for a game. Yes, that's the plan. A game...
Isn't that why we're all alive to begin with?

Same.
