hi, i'm planning on upgrading my CPU to Intel Core2Quad Q8300 2.6ghz. what are the things that I have to keep in mind when upgrading?

is there any compatability issues that i have to look for?

and if it's really required to format my system drive after changing my CPU?

actually, this is my 1st time on changing my CPU that's why I wanna be careful. lol.
thanks for your advice 😉

this is my current specs:

ASUS P5-KPLAM SE (mobo)
Intel Dual Core E6300 2.8ghz
Seagate Barracuda 80GB
Seagate Barracuda 250GB
Kingston 4GB RAM
Inno3D GT240 512MB DDR5
Windows 7 Ultimate
FSP Epsilon 600W

there is nothing official from amd it was leaked via asus. When AMD reps were asked they would not confirm if you do a google search for zambezi chipset (I may be way off on that search) it's out there I read it yesterday. I'd look it for you but I'm off to bed atm.

is it still okay to use DDR2 rams? Coz i've seen this mobo for athlon ii x4 which costs $10 more than the one i previously chosen.

and uhm aside from the AM3 slot for the procs, are there still any other compatability/requiments stuffs that i still have to consider when buying the right mobo for the procs? Like the FSB speed thingy. Lol.

sorry for my long list of questions. I just wann clear things out before upgrading 😛

again, THANKS 😀

The PhII 840 'Propus' quad processor would be a better choice over the 640.

The question is whether you may find a 'black socket' motherboard to pair it with where you live. This would allow a future upgrade to Bulldozer Zambezi - here is Gigabyte's list:

And the Asus AM3+ compatibility for AM3 motherboards

MSI made an announcement on Friday, and AsRock has compatible 'black socket' motherboards on their web site.

is the ph2 x4 propus the same with this? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103921 this is just the only ph4 x4 840 that's for sale.

and i can't find any AM3+ black sockets on the list =(

actually i'm not really in a hurry, i am just looking for cheaper alternatives. that's why i want to know the stuffs that i need from both intel and AMD procs. anyway, you guys helped me a lot, if you wanna add anything, just post it here. 😉

That would be the one.

The specs are quite similar other than the 200MHz clock speed but the PhII 840 Propus seems to clock a bit higher on lower voltage. There were a number of reviews from Jan or so that came out when the 840 was introduced (and compared to a 'real' Propus).

Every week or so the 840 pops up with a $10 discount in the States. There is one on this weekend with code EMCYTZT379 valid til 11:59PM PDT on Sunday, 4/3/2011, at your link.

I'm itchin' to jump on it with the Asus M4A79XTD EVO AM3 790X -- I've got some RAM sticks laying around that are on the Asus QVL. Hard to beat if saving a few bucks for a potent rig -- even if it's not a black socket.

if im goin for that, well i guess adding $2 wont at least kill me lol. uhm what does L2 Cache Count and L3 Cache means?

just in case that ill go for an AMD, will it be compatible (athlon ii x4 640/phenom ii x4 840) with this board?

i'm just looking for a cheaper board tho. no plans on overclocking (not at least the GPU lol). and just like what i've said earlier, my case is just fir Micro ATX board lol. 😀

The GeForce 6150SE & nForce 430 chipset is quite ... elderly? 😛 been around for years

It will (or should) work fine -- the PhII 840 Propus is on the cpu support list.

Each CPU core has its own L1 & L2 cache. L1 cache is instruction/data - L2 holds data which has been 'flushed' from L1.

L3 cache stores data flushed from all CPU L2 caches and is 'shared' between all cores (that's the good part). The bad part is L3 introduces a touch higher latency when storing that flushed data.

The lack of L3 is not that big of a deal, really. The general rule of thumb is the lack of L3 will give you a 5% or so performance hit when processing large amounts of data.

is it still good to use DDR2s today? i found this mobo which is kinda better (err i think. XD) than MSI 785GTM-E45 for phenom ii x4 840.

MSI GF615M-P33

oh btw, i've found several mobos that has AM2+ sockets. are they compatible with the phenom ii x4 840?

@dadiggles: i can't find Asrock mobos on the list 🙁

sorry i was asking a lot of questions XD
