What cpu should I get that's affordable and plays games with great fps. I'm switching from a fx 8120 and it's a big disappointment when I play games. The frame drops are constant. I have a r9 270x and I was wondering what's the best cpu that's under 200 and a good motherboard.

Do you need the combo of motherboard and CPU to be under 200 or just the CPU? You can get a nice i5 for right around 200, but you will have to drop another 60-100 on a motherboard.

After that? Quad core at least for what will be basically a new build, and a high quality mobo is always worth it.
Make sure the cpu/mobo combo you choose uses ram you can afford, DDR 4 is not cheap.
Good luck, and if the budget for an Intel with DDR4 is out of the question, perhaps an on sale 8350 with a mild OC would be an interim measure. There is a decent jump to be had there, but still $180 is USD. Something like.. 30% gain in cpu thruput from a 8120 to an 8350 with roughly equal levels of overclock.
I have one, paired with a R290x, and am quite please with the performance.
Of course my numbers would be higher with the latest Intel set up, but wallet says "NO!"

Maybe it's just some simple settings in the BIOS disable amd cool and quiet and other power saving features. It's no secret that cpu's underclocks itself with variable multiplier.

Both @4.4 love the i5, but the fx8350 is like my old Russian neuclear reactor.

You can just move hard drive to new motherboard and re enter the key to activate the OS. Anyhow, that FX CPU isn't the reason for your frame drops- how much RAM you got, what hard drive (specs), and what games are you playing?

It could be many things, but he didn't list specs, he didn't say what's wrong- just wants a new CPU because it will stop frame drops. The FX processors cannot make you stutter, it's just a processor. If temps are too high it may be throttling during game sessions, either way- upgrading will likely not solve anything if it's not CPU related in the first place.

Depending where the user's at, if the u.s. the 4460 is only $2 cheaper than the 4590 at the moment. $2 is well worth an extra 300mhz on turbo. I'd go for the 4590.
In terms of gaming, it's no secret that even the fx 8350 has lower min frame rates than i5's do in a majority of games. Most only look at max or average fps, depending on the min frames it could be causing issues. Obviously if min frames means 90fps on a 60hz monitor then no but that's not the usual case.

If the OP has a OEM Windows license, then it is "likely" that he would need a new Windows license if/when he installs a different motherboard, since OEM license keys are tied to the mobo.

Because just booting the pc with a completely different mobo/cpu with the old install of Windows leads to much badness.
It is possible to get Windows to allow his current license to be declared a valid copy, even after a hardware change of this nature, sometimes needing a call to Microsoft, and a little begging. Counting on that happening as a garanteed thing is not such a good idea.

Fx 8120@4.0 r9 270x windforce x3 Asus motherboard m5a97 pro 8gb ram 750 watt power supply all drivers are up to date.
I get good frames but every second it drops from 90fps to 30 than upf to 70 and down to 30 it makes the game in playable and I tried almost everything to fix by switching parts and the only thing left is the fx 8120

That's the issue. AMD's GPU drivers have a chock point in their control logic that runs on a single thread, they actually do better on Intel CPU's while NVidia GPU's have no preference either way. Go figure that...

he's saying that it's your gpu that's causing the drops, but that may not be the case, I had bad frame drops on my gtx 660 when I played battlefield 4 on windows 7, as soon as I went to windows 8.1 it went away.
