Im torn between 1440p and 1080p at 140hz

which of these 2 options would produce the better quality but also maintaining a steady yet high FPS in higher end games. right now im using a 1080p 60hz monitor and just about everything i throw at it in ultra with a steady 60 fps.

Specs as followed:

CPU: AMD FX-8350 black edition
GPU: R9 280x sapphire x2
Motherboard: ASUS sabertooth 990fx

my second question is would bumping up to either one significantly decrease perfomance?

Solution
This is a personal question on what is important to you.

Do you find smooth, highly responsive gaming more important to you?
Or do you prefer higher quality images?

A 1440p monitor will reduce performance, as it has to render more pixels.
A 144hz 1080p monitor will either not hurt, or help performance, depending on whether you use V-sync. A 144hz raises the FPS limit to 144 FPS.

You have the GPU performance to handle either.
Your CPU may bottleneck the 144hz monitor from time to time. You'll still get good performance, but you may find you cannot get as high as the monitor and GPU would allow.

Bumping to the 1440p would definitely decrease performance compared to your 1080p monitor. If you're going to upgrade, get the 1440p monitor because at 1080p 140hz, you'll just feel the same way as the old monitor that you have.

But if you go with 1440p, expect that the framerate would drop because of the GPU that you have. I'm not saying it can't handle it, actually you'll be getting 40fps average at max everything. But the advantage of getting the 1440p over the 1080p is that you can turn off the AA. 1440p has more pixel count, so you won't be needing as much AA than what you need when you have with the 1080p.

I would definitely go with the 1440p, you will notice a much bigger difference in visuals and the screen real estate when not gaming is awesome. I have my 1440p matched with a 7970 which is basically the same as the 280x and it works fine. I didn't notice a big hit in performance coming from 1920x1200 because you are able to turn down/turn off AA which brings performance up.

You will not regret getting a 1440p monitor where as you might regret a 144Hz 1080p because a single 280x can't generally push that many fps.

its kind of pointless going past 60fps, correct?

Can you explain this? From every benchmark, review and experience I've seen, it is the opposite. 1440p will reduce the need for a faster CPU, and 144hz will increase the need for a faster CPU.

cool! next question is where should i be looking and how much should i expect to spend for one?

You did say you were getting two 280x's...or did I read that incorrectly?

As far as 144hz vs 1440p, again, that is a personal choice. I'd never get 1440p over 120/144hz, as I get sick at less than 80 displayed FPS, which is probably related to latency, which is another issue with these screens. It also makes games feel like your view is connected to your mouse movements.

On the other hand, 1440p is well liked as well for its color and crisper images, better color and viewing angles.

Have you decided what is important to you? Just because he likes one, and I like the other, does not mean you will prefer one or the other.

Boy am I dumb lol this was copied and pasted from an older post and I changed my gpu but forgot to change my CPU. I have since then upgraded to a 8350 black edition

I would like a crisper nicer color. So I guess the 1440p would be for me. And yes I am cross firing 2 280x's and I copied and pasted from an older post and I remembered to change my gpu but forgot to change my CPU upgrade. I have since then got a 8350 black edition

i was actually looking at this brand Qnix and i think i may do this. they seem fairly cheap too.

I have a Qnix 1440p overclocked to 96Hz right now, great monitor. Just remember you can only connect with a dual link DVI cable so you won't be able to hook up an xbox or playstation to the monitor. Although they do sell ones for a little more money that have HDMI and other types of connections.

Check out http://www.overclock.net/t/1384767/official-the-korean-pls-monitor-club-qnix-x-star I would highly recommend my Qnix monitor to any one that is looking for an inexpensive 1440p. They over clock super easy also.

Yep, if you plan on buying a Korean monitor, make sure that your GPU does DVI-D out. As for the branding, get a QNIX or X-Star (I prefer QNIX as it looks a bit better, and the name doesn't sound as silly as X-Star, but they are both effectively the same monitor).
