The multi-platter drives will be wonderful for servers. With this kind of storage density, you could have a single mini platter drive in your desktop or laptop. Something so small you could just plug it directing into a powered SATA port on your MB without needing a cable. By those figures, you'd still have many TBs of space on something that small.

Who's this "we"? 1TB drives are in no way huge. Very easy to hit this cap. Some people actually "use" their computers for something other than email.

I'm still not able to fill my hotmail account after 10 years (just few Gb).
My 600Gb drive is empty at 50%.
So for sure I don't care about 100TB.

I'd love this, as I do a lot of HD recording. But unless battery technology catches up, so my camcorder can record in HD longer, it's not that useful to me. It's only video that will take up significant hard disk space.

Do you live in the US. They just passed a law saying we can make back ups of our physical media including Blu-Ray and dvd. The second I found that out i ripped all my blu-rays to my home server. With the new law you can crack your PC games and there were some other things in there.

Bus speed is not the bottleneck of hard drives, it is their mechanical nature that is the bottleneck. Compression; Yes, useful and can drastically reduce the amount of data space used. But the key with compression is to compare multiple files together, say, multiple movie rips and connect parts of frames of movies together to eliminate more redundancy in the data..

The Acrobat Reader 9 package that you download, uses a form of this .. comparing data across multiple files, not on a 1 file basis.

Someone said 1 TB is enough space till 2020? That's like saying we don't need anything faster then a Pentium 4. I filled my 1 TB drive and need to expand. 130 gigs worth of music, 300 gigs worth of movies, maybe about 20 games installed, plus my desktop is a DVR. Frankly, i could use a 100 TB drive right now.

It always boggles my mind when people say that technology doesn't need to progress anymore. That it's fast enough, or holds enough data. I want a robot house maid, and i'm guessing it will need a little more than 1 TB of storage space.

SSD will become the norm, once they hit 500gb for around $200, why even bother with a mechanical HD anymore.

For one reason.. performance. Something to be said about actually possessing your data too. Although I agree, having the ability to stream media will be nice, and not having to worry if your drive will fail will be another. Performance will still be a concern for me. Say, need to burn from a DVD Image of an important app I purchased online for example. I really would hope I wouldn't have to download that again before I could burn it - that could take a lot of time. This is where massive hard drives come in handy. If only there was a solution that combined the power and reliability of Cloud with that of conventional hard drives.

First of all, lack of 100TB drives isn't holding back "piracy." Second, "piracy" drives the paid market. That's why the music/movie/tv/gaming industries post new record high profits year after year.

$165??? Since an 80GB HDD only cost around $35, I think I'll pass...

Point is $165 for 80 gigs, or $75 for 1024 gigs...do the math, it costs half as much and you get 12-13x the capacity. And everybody who says they dont need it, im sure Windows 10 will take 50 gigs and everything will use more hdd space. Get the tech to do it, let it come down in price, then make software to utilize it, thats how things work. Im sure by then, something new will be out too, possibly replacing both ssd and hdd. No use in thinking that far to the future, anything can change by then.

They'd better start improving fast. A lot of people whine about SSD sizes, but they're increasing in size exponentially, like mag drives USED to. SSD is the real future, much more durable and less prone to failure, whereas they seem to be desperately trying to find ways to further compress the innards of a mag drive, which sounds less reliable mechanically. Sized means absolutely nothing on an unreliable drive, I don't want to lose 100TB because I bumped the drive.
Oh, and yes there is a need for these sizes. Anyone who doesn't understand the need for 100TB needs to step into the HD era. Imagine what kind of sizes they're going to be using 10 years from now.
Drop PMR and step up the game now, or mag drives are going to be obsolete before they ever get this out.

You want to deal with transferring that amount of data over the internet?
The fastest residential connection I can get is 100MBit down and 5MBit up... Not too shabby but try uploading 100TB worth of data on 5MBit upload? Hell even transferring that amount on a 100MBit would be still be stupid... Not to mention the security/privacy issues when you give up control of your important files to some 3rd party corporation... *shudder*
This cloud stuff is over rated for most situations, we moved from mainframes to desktops for a good reason...
