Also, doesn't need to be manually updated. Be sure and uninstall any other anti-virus software.

Daemon tools installs a rootkit. You may want it's functionaliy, and I do, but you should be aware that every file access will be examined by this rootkit and allowed to either pass on to the normal file system or not, at the discretion of the rootkit. That's how they hide themselves from anti-piracy measures.

Defraggler - also from Piriform, same as CrapCleaner is an excelent defragger with a catchy name to boot.
IrfanView - I agree with Killerclick, it's a MUST have.

Agree with Franklin Hennersdorfer re Windows Explorer, esp the Status Bar. Was not aware of 'Windows Classic Shell' Will get it immediately. Thanks for the info

You might want to consider Alcohol 52% (free for personal non-commercial use) instead of Daemon Tools... supports 64-bit Win 7, which doesn't work well for Daemon Tools.

VLC? It's a dinosaur. Try The KMPlayer - a million times better. I agree with another comment on here that IrfanView is essential for quick image viewing and minor manipulation. I also hate these multi-page articles :)

The only two sei-useful tools on this list: Filezilla and Trillion. I did say semi....
There are just too many useless articles anymore on this site. Please, I urge you to quit just trying to fill space in the abyss of the internet.
What happened to the good old day of TH?

Hey how about IZArc for a zip utility instead of 7-zip or WinRAR? I think I tried 7-zip a loong time ago, and IZArc was superior. Perhaps times have changed, but I still love it. Never had any problems with it, and it handles linux formats like .tar and .gz which a lot of other archive programs can't... again, not sure about 7-zip or WinRAR in these days.

I can't believe you didn't mention XnView.
I agree with the comment on The KMPlayer. The KMPlayer with Real Alt Lite covers all my video needs.
For compression, Izarc or PeaZip (Why are they not listed?)

If there was any question as to the paid advertisement (Windows 7 not Windows, even though most run on winxp) the Steam DRM at the end seals it. Poor tom's, literally.

[citation][nom]Anonymous[/nom]Suggesting VLC over MPC-HC? Something is very wrong here.[/citation]
Yeah, and the wrongness begins with suggesting stuff like "Windows Live ANYTHING."

As for VLC vs. MPC, I can say this much: I have used them both at points in the past. VLC is on my comp, now, and I don't generally find it lacking. MPC looks more polished for HT usage, but I don't see some useful stuff listed e.g. speed control. FWIW VLC has never failed to open a file. It may be a little rough in the polish aspect but it more than gets the job done.

Sry to necro but ppl hating on programs that help me out and/or ppl recommending microsoft's couldn't-design-useful-software-their-way-out-of-a-wet-paper-bag garbage are two pet peeves and the truth must be known!

There's a new project called "The Document Foundation" replacing Open Office with "LibreOffice", led by those who formerly worked on OpenOffice. It's free, identical to the original, and they plan to improve upon it. Goodbye OpenOffice
