License to Kill was Timothy Dalton. I think he was fine in the role, although many fans of the Bond films think he was overshadowed by the most recent actor to don the suit, Pierce Brosnan.
This is a mostly complete list, in order of the actors that played the role:
1) Sean Connery, the original Bond on film -- He was the smoothest, most debonair Bond, and his films had the coolest super villains. But he also had some of the most outlandish, unbelievable plots.
Films include: "From Russia With Love," "Goldfinger," "Dr. No," "Thunderball," "You Only Live Twice," and "Dimonds Are Forever."
2) George Lazenby was cast as an interim Bond, for "On Her Majesty's Secret Service." It was considered one of Ian Fleming's best books, but for many the movie was ruined by Lazenby being cast in the role. He was not invited back for a sequel.
3) Roger Moore. His was a more wisecracking, laid back Bond. Moore's movies had the most scantilly clad women, naughtiest titles and neatest gadgets (like the afore-mentioned submarine Lotus Esprit). Those movies also had some of the best theme songs, several hitting the Top 20 pop lists (including one ex-Beatle.)
Films included "For Your Eyes Only" (Top 10 hit by Sheena Easton), "The Spy Who Loved Me" ("Nobody Does it Better," big hit for Carly Simon), "Live and Let Die (Paul McCartney), "Octopussy," "Moonraker" and "A View to a Kill."
4) Timothy Dalton only made two movies as Bond, I think. "License to Kill" and "The Living Daylights." I think these were the first to be turned into video games, but I'm not sure about that.
5) The most recent bond, Pierce Brosnan, brought us an updated, modern bond with more believable plots and villains (terrorists, drug cartels, etc.) Movies included "The World is Not Enough," "Goldeneye," "Tomorrow Never Dies" and "Die Another Day."
6) There's a new fellow I read about some weeks ago who will be in the next Bond movie, but honestly, I've kind of lost interest. The Cold War's over, so the whole superspy thing is kind of pointless, IMHO.
Now that we're irretrievably off topic, I'll end it there.
