Hi there,
I've just noticed that I have installed a later but incorrect bios for my system.
the correct one is the F6 released on the 19th of June 2014, I have installed the F8 released 19th of September 2015.
I have tried the Q flash method on the gigabyte board to restore back to the correct one which was already on it
but it kept getting error message that the one I currently have is newer and no option to install anyway was available.
Is there a way I can restore back to the old one? This is also a dual bios motherboard, perhaps there is another option.
Thanking you in advance for all suggestions and help

Solution
I think the F8 is for the 5th gen CPU, mine is 4th gen. So it is correct for the board but not for the CPU
No it's for your processor the 4xxx is all that board supports.

EDIT It looks like it does support some 5XXX processors that I have never even heard of but it should still work with your processor.
Does your BIOS offer a way to use the backup BIOS to over-write the main BIOS?
Are the BIOS chips socketed? That way you could swap them.
Nevermind, I just looked at the board's pic. The chips aren't socketed.

This is exactly what I'm hoping to do,
I used the bios switch on the board to switch backup bios and that still has the
factory stock bios still installed. Trouble is i have no idea how to over write the main bios with the backup.

The F8 version was for the correct motherboard? If so then you just updated the BIOS you did not install the wrong one.

I think you're correct, I have just spoken with someone from Gigabyte and they confirmed it should still work on the 4th gen. My confusion was because I get black screen with stock clock stressing with occt. I set bios to use default optimised settings.
I was going to overclock but couldn't even get stable at stock speed.

Thanks anyway, at least I know my issue isn't the bios

I'm not through with you yet LOL.
Still got the motherboard manual? if not download it!

You should have a BIOS switch that you can go to the backup BIOS and it be the original version you had.

Upper right side of the board.

I have the same board but not the black version so mine don't have the switch the good thing about GB boards dual BIOS.

EDIT not sure of the switch to use but it should be in the manual.

I still have the manual thanks 😊
So I switched to the backup bios but when I started the PC it went through an automatic repair process but did not boot into windows. It repeats the repair process every time I exit. Also no option to over write the main bios with the backup

Did you have to switch from IDE to ACHI when you installed windows originally? If you did try to boot into BIOS and make sure it's right.

Other than that that's about all the help online I can be.

You should be able to switch back to the other BIOS and it work.

I didn't actually. I'm super grateful for you help and time anyway. I suspect the bios is correct for both motherboard and CPU. I may have to post in another thread for help as to why I'm not stable at stock

I just upgraded about a month ago from the same motherboard just not the black version.

What does occt say your voltage is when you start the test?

I didn't check the voltage on occt but it was 1.268 on CPU id, I.271 on intel extreme tuning utility and 1.282 on HW monitor. I dont know what the discrepancy is about, thats another thing that made me suspect incorrect bios

The bad thing about the BIOS is after F6 you can't go back.
That should do stock settings easy mine was overclocked to 4.6 with 1.26 volts.
Check that your memory is set correctly, and what cooler are you using?

Wow, i guess you are on water. I'm on air, hyper 212. I wasn't looking for a major overclock, just a bit. It turbos to 4.4 on all cores with the gigabyte bios anyway so I guess that good enough, qhat I dont get is why it crashes on occt. I must say it does get pretty toasty, I just ran the flight simulator P3D and it got up to 81c. It was boosting to 4.4 on all cores every now and then

Same air cooler I'm using now Cryorig R1 I would not really be trying to overclock it with a hyper 212 those chips ran on the hot side anyhow but it should not be crashing on OCCT if your just using the basic settings on the program.

Again I would check the memory settings in BIOS. The bad thing about updating BIOS is you really never know what they did.

For a general rule Never update the BIOS unless it addresses a specific problem your having with the PC.

I still don't get why the 2nd BIOS did not work since you said you made no changes before installing Windows.

Thank you. The memory settings are done automatically by the ram sticks. Its the HyperX HX318C10F/8 FURY Blue, 8 GB, 1866 MHz DDR3 CL10 DIMM
2 sticks.

I can't enable XMP because it does it by itself.
I forgot to mention that at one point I manually set the voltage to 1.2 and cinebench, intel burn test and aida64 ran well. 1.2 but at stock speed turbos to 4.4 on all cores.
I wasn't ready to get the i5 10600k because I didn't want to have to buy another motherboard. Maybe its time

Turbo speed of the 4790K should be 4.2 on all cores not 4.4 the 4.4 is single core boost speed.

Oh yeah, that's true. The gigabyte board is boosting it to 4.4 on all cores by default and applying voltage of 1.271 on air, should I manually set all cores to 4.2 and voltage to 1.2?
It gets pretty toasty at the moment got up to 81c on my flight sim or is this acceptable
Its also pretty unstable by occt test at gigabyte default settings

If your using a GB program to boost/overclock the processor I would turn that off.
