Infrequent but regular boot error crash

My pc seems to have developed a problem where once, or at most twice a month it will suddenly crash to a black screen and display the message "reboot and select proper boot device. Or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key". The only way to fix it is to press the power button and the computer will load back up fine. Every time it happens though I always have to go into BIOS and rearrange the boot order as the drive with the OS is always knocked down to second place when it happens.

This error first happened in about February and has been infrequent since then. The longest I have ever gone without it happening is two months and the shortest, just one week. It is usually once a month almost like clockwork though. There seems to be nothing specific causing it either as the occurrences all seem very random.

The computer works perfectly otherwise. This issue first began after the people I bought the pc from, in an effort to get me to try everything possible before they would finally admit that my graphics card was faulty, asked me to reinstall Windows. An effort that turned out to be a waste of time. It was Windows 8 that I reinstalled and I have since upgraded to 10. They now say that I should try and update BIOS to see if that fixes it. Should I try that? Does anybody have any advice on what might fix the problem or what might be causing it? Any help would be hugely appreciated!!

can be two issues. one is the power supply is dropping below the atx spec and the hard drive is showing the error. use hardware info 64 bit set it to sensor and logging see if on the next crash that the voltage were holding. the other issue can be a failing controller on the hard drive. use hdtune and check for any warnings. also use seatools or wd test tools to see if the drive passes or fails.

bios update most times is done to fix a bug that the vendor finds with there mb and a device. most bios updates will tell you what they fix. on your main bios screen will be the mb info and bios rev. you would google that to see how old the bios is and if there any need to do it. most of the bios updates the last 18 months have been for newer intel cpu that have come out.

I'm guessing it cant be the BIOS that is at fault. Had no issues for the first 7 months I had the pc. Crashes only began after I reinstalled Windows. The crash has probably only happened 10 times in 7 months but I'm still not happy about it.

After the crash there is always a critical error in the logs. Event 41 - Kernel Power, about the system not shutting down properly. Is this not probably caused by me pressing the power button to shut the PC down though? If so, what should I be looking for?
