[SOLVED] Insanely high temps

Just cleaned case thoughoughly(compressed air, microfiber rag with rubbing alcohol on non eletronic parts) reapplied artic silver thermal paste(cleaned with rubbing alcohol and q-tips) with a pea size dot.

Yet it still running very hot with Prime95 load 90s before I shut it down The pc crashed on me yesterday and was reaching low 80s playing warhammer total war 2 which prompted me to clean. The pc runs around 41 idle(which isnt bad). My cpu cooler is a 212 hyper evo and although I made sure to screw correctly(opposing corners and a twist at a time) the heatswink can still swivel which I read happens but it stay anchored when I lift up on the heatsink. Now I redone the thermal paste twice because I thought I may have added too much because of high temps, but the same thing is happening.

I did notice I place a few fans the wrong way intake as opposed to exhaust(4 fans 3 intake and 1 exhaust) but still the cpu temps shouldn't be running this hot. I dont have an overclock and never had this kind of problem after applying thermal paste before.

Voltage looks fine, that is also a good PSU. You also mentioned some hissing sound from the PSU, does it still happen?

By what you said after touching the heatpipes, it seems that heat is not being conducted.

The thermal paste doesn't have to sit like a sandwich. The thermal paste's use it to even out the surface, fill micro gaps and provide uniform heat conduction by increasing surface area. I have run some PCs even without the thermal paste, they operate fine but, not optimally.

When you finally tight the screws, only micrometer of the heatsink paste must remain in between the heatsink and CPU, lesser than the...

Probably spring screws are not tight enough. Tighten them up a bit.

The spread was near perfect...and yeah I ordered a 120mm fan and a 140mm fan because my back case one stopped and acts up from working on and off. Wonder If I have a psu short...it does make a static like noise and I can't tell if this is coil whine or failing psu.

I tighened the screwed quite tight...2nd time reapplying thermal paste the mobo screw holding came lose so I had to tighten the nuts in the back. When I pulled up on the heatsink it didnt lift off contact, but it does swivel which I read is normal as that middle false screw really doesn't do much.

I am thinking its not having fan blowing air on the cpu/heatsink. Idle temps are in the low 40s high 30s. Lowest temp it got was 34.

If you have a hair dryer, run it with the heater off to check if cools the CPU. Just to check on the theory.
And Yes, not having fan does make a difference.

Updates. I got the new cpu fan and installed it but my temp hit 81 degrees still using aida64. The temperature will spike for a second then fall back down into the lower 70s. I am still missing the rear exhaust fan, but I don't think that is what is causing such high temps with my cpu since I still have ample air flow. Very frustrating. Any suggestions?

Temps on idle is lower than before around 31 package and as low as 25 for a core.

Case fan can lower the temps 5'c in best case scenario. That isn't the problem.
It's either the placement or the cooler itself.
What thermal compound are you using?
Do you remember when it started.

Artic silver compound, granted it like 4 years old but was in an airtight ziplock bag with the cap on. Using a coolermaster hyper 212 evo. Have it so the heatsink fins are horizontal for maximum airflow. I switch thed cpu fan from exhaust to intake. I have it blowing from the bottom to the top where my top fan is blowing hot air out of the case. My side and front fans are intakes and my rear will be an exhaust.
In 6 minutes the max temp it reached was 85 but it would fall back down to the low/mid 70s then spike again. Maybe I didnt clean the heatsink fins good enough but it looked fine when I used compressed air on it. I guess I can apply thermal paste again.

I noticed it crashing(albeit it only crashed 3 times so far) a couple weeks ago when I bought my new gpu and started using graphic/cpu extensive games. I was playing a few cpu extensive but it never crashed so I thought the temps were fine.

Maybe I didnt put the paste on right or the screws arent clamped tight enough, but from what I can see I did it right.

Wait! that's in Fahrenheit. That's normal. Your cpu shouldn't reach 80'C

Can the PSU cause overheating and is there a way to check if it is overvolting? It didn't show any crazy voltage during the stress test, but it does have a static like noise coming from it. I still have 2 years on the psu warranty(Its a HX 750 cosair).

That means the thermal paste application was installed correct though, right? I am pretty sure the fins were pretty dust free too. I'll give it another go. Also can I se rubbing alcohol to clean the heatsink 91%?

Really can't say anything for now. :/

When reaching 80'C touch the fins of the cooler, they should be pretty hot. if they aren't, touch the part where heatpipes are exposed, atleast the heatpipes should be hot. If not, then there's something wrong with the cooler itself.(Touch the case in the bare metal part to remove static in your body)

Next time when you apply thermal paste, make a thin X mark and tight the cooler really really well. You are doing everything right but I just want to make sure it isn't because of a thermal paste sandwich.
As I asked before, was there a clear event when you noticed the temps going off, like you knocked something off or moved your PC.

Just touched the heatsink and the heatpipe and they were cool...So maybe there is no contact ot the cpu. Its odd the heatsink is sticking to the cpu but it can swivel...I'll reclean, reapply and reseat.

Update: Cleaned the heatsink. Cleaned up the paste and reapplied and made sure to star pattern screw down the screws yet with aida 64 it reached 73 degrees and was rising slowly(slower than before at least). I didnt do the X mark unforunately. I touched the heatpipe and heatsink during load and they were cool. I'm at a complete loss here.

Update-update: Reapplied again.....staying at 73C max(raised to 75C degrees while stressing and on internet) under load so far with cpuid Hwmonitor. Aida64 temp says 67Cmax(average 60) degrees under load. Using Aida 64 to stress test. Aida 64 temp current is hovering around 64-66 with occasional temp fluctuations.Hwmonitor is current flucating between 65-69 with occasional dips to 57-72 on average with a 75C max.

Those temps are acceptable but still too high. Should be in the low 60s imho.

-----30 minutes of aida64 stress testing and 75C(HWmonitor)Max and (Aida64) temps 67C Max.

More problems. The pc just shut off. Restarted the game and monitered the cpu....temps are fine. I am wondering if it is psu after all. I can't tell if the fan is spinning or not in it. Gonna run memtest86 before bed just in case.

What PSU do you have?
PSU wont cause heating up but it can cause a random shutdown.

Sudden spikes in temps is not something that is normal.

The right way now is to try out one thing at a time.
1) Get a PSU from friend an try first.

No matter how bad a cooler, the heatpipes should be hot when operating at 70'C+. It's possible that you are applying the paste wrongly, or it could be your motherboard over-volting the CPU.
