i am currently trying to reinstall my retail copy of windows 7 on a dell inspiron 530 but i keep getting a bsod while trying to install
bsod #1 IRQL is not equal to or greater
bsod #2 error codes are 0x000000c5,0x00000005,0x00000002,0x00000000,0x8B76B87B
i had windows 7 installed on this machine before but i swapped out hard drives since the old ones were starting to die i backed up all info and purchased the same hard drives same make and model and capacity as the old ones
now all i can get to install is windows xp not even ubuntu ubuntu keeps reporting a kernel panic and terminating the install. any ideas

the specs are
refurbished dell replacement board last year
intel pentium dual core 2.4ghz
invidia geforce 8800 512mb gt
6 gb of ram (ram installed is new and was used in the previous win7 install)
bios is up to date
both seagate hds are a 250gb and a 1tb (new and partitioned)same as old config

bugcheck 0xc5 indicates a driver corrupted pool but the memory address is bogus.
the memory dump for this should name the driver. if it names a third party driver then good odds it is the cause.
If it names a core windows driver then most likely something else corrupted the memory.

you can put the memory dump on a server an post a link.
or try whocrashed.exe or bluescreenview.exe to try to get a automated parsing/debugging of the file.

i tried all those and also tried all the suggested fixes so instead of tossing it it reset the cmos from the jumpers and everything loaded and i've been slowly installing the peripherals one at a time but it now freezes when it comes to the splash screen when i have the other 4gb of memory installed i took everything down to 4gb and have tested and retested the ram for the past two days and the ram is still good i even exchanged the ram and it still freezes any ideas?

put your memory dump on a server and maybe I can see what windows thinks the problem is.
if it is just freezing and not generating a bugcheck you can turn on debugging.
run cmd.exe as an admin, run
verifier.exe /standard /all
this will force windows to bughceck if a bad driver attempt to access memory it does not own.

Note use verifier.exe /reset
to turn off verifier after you finish testing or you machine will run slowly until you do.

Note: if you get a freeze but no bugcheck, then google how to force a memory dump with a keyboard, make the registry settings reboot and the next time you freeze, use the keyboard to force a memory dump and put it on a server and post a link.

if you can not force a memory dump with a keyboard, then the problem will be in your storage, often the SATA driver or port that the storage is connected to. Try updating your SATA driver, check your cables maybe move your cable to another port. Try the slower port supported directly by the CPU rather than the extended faster SATA ports that have custom drivers. (often they have bugs in the BIOS and in the driver and you have to apply updates to get them to work correctly)

done all that but still cant make the motherboard see the other ram it just freezes on the dell splash screen if the other ram is detected so i remove it and it will boot but the cmos will be reset i don't know whats the problem my other dell inspiron 530 will detect and use the other ram i've taken the machine to another tech and he said everything checks out fine everything works and the ram is still good so that's my problem

RAM detection depend on the BIOS version. The BIOS detects the RAM and sets up the default timing for the electronics.
if you use RAM modules with different timings you can get memory corruption depending on which timing was selected as the default. (the slower timing will work on faster ram but the fast timings will produce errors on the slower RAM)

update the BIOS, reset it to defaults to get the newest RAM timings. If you RAM is not on the approved RAM list you may have to set the timings manually in BIOS. After you set up the RAM timings, run memtest86 on its own boot image to confirm the settings are ok.

i have the bios up to date from both dell and the manufacturer site the ram was detected and being used before the reinstall of windows 7 on the system and if it didn't freeze on the dell splash screen i would be able to do all that you suggested but everytime i re-install the ram and plug the machine back in there is a amber light on the power button even before i turn it on so right now i am only able to use two 1gb sticks
the current bios is 1.0.1.8 the most up to date bios from dell is 1.0.1.8
i have reset the cmos both from dos and the jumpers popped the battery out changed the battery let it sit without the battery overnight pushed the power button for after unplugging the machine
and as i stated before the ram was detected and usable before the reinstall and reset now the machine freezes when the ram is installed and i can't get into anything if it's stuck on the dell splash screen and the f2 and f12 options are not available
