install windows 8 on a new ssd then remove 7 from an hdd

I currently have windows 7 installed on my hard drive but just got windows 8 and a new ssd. I am wanting to install windows 8 on the new ssd and then keep my hard drive for storage purposes.

How do I go about doing this? Will I need to back up my current hard drive and reformat or is there an easier solution for getting rid of the old operating system?

Do yourself a favor and format that drive after backing it up and then install the ssd and install win 8.
Don't forget to set the ssd as ahci.
