Firstly my specifications:
Intel Core i3 550 (CPU) I just installed the i7 860
Gigabyte Technology Co (Motherboard manufacturer)
H57M-USB3 (Motherboard model)
4GB DDR3 Corsair Ram
2133.4MHz (NB Frequency)
Nvidia Geforce GTX 660
1.8TB Hard drive
64-bit Operating System

Now for my problem
Hello, today we replaced my current CPU (i3 550) with the i7 860. We thought we did everything right, took out the CPU cooler, replaced the i3 and then added a dab of thermal paste (We may have added a bit too much :/). Plugged everything back into the computer and started it back up again. On the beginning of the PC boot, it made a very strange bleep sound, it never used to make that noise on start ups. We got onto the desktop and it began downloading the drivers. It was all going fine, all the drivers were installed until it unexpectedly turned off. I rebooted up the computer and then 5 seconds after start-up, it suddenly shut off again. Everytime now that I turn on my PC, it would then shut down 3 or 4 seconds later, it is driving us insane!

We have no idea what the problem is, is it our current hardware that is affecting it or did we do something wrong in the process? We need help....

Well ive got two ideas.

First check to make sure no thermal paste has come into contact with the motherboard. I only say this because you mentioned possibly using too much thermal paste. If it is then turn your turn you pc completely off and unplug the psu from the wall and remove the thermal paste.

Second if the above didn't work (as in there was no thermal paste leaking from underneath the CPU cooler) then try reseating your motherboards CMOS battery. If its non removable you may need to use a screw driver to start the jumper which will reset it.

Yes, we did clean the paste off of the cpu cooler, we began scraping some tiny parts off with a screw driver, then we decided to use methylated spirits to clean the rest.

Could that be the culprit to why my CPU keeps overheating? I've only managed to get onto my desktop, with it shutting off a few seconds later.

Don't think so.. unless you used a hammer as well 😉

Get into bios and check cpu temp. If cpu temp is ok, try loading optimized defaults.

what kind of PSU u have? Try different one. PSU are more likely to die than CPU/RAM/mobo.
