I read that static electricity can have terrible effects on graphics cards. what is the proper way to install one without shorting it out?

Solution
Ground yourself first (by touching something metal, or your PC case). This will discharge any static in your body. Lay the graphics card on the anti-static wrap that it came in before you install it (if you need to lay it down or something prior to installing it) avoid laying it on carpet, cardboard is ok.

When you touch the card, avoid touching it on the connections (PCIe and SLI). A good spot to grab it is the edges (that aren't connections). Another good spot is the part that you screw into your case (the shiny silver part). Avoid lifting it by the heatsink or fans as well.
