I have a 1 terabyte seagate hardrive that was the primary drive in my old windows 7 machine that I would like to connect to a new windows 8 machine to retrieve pictures and documents. Can I just connect the drive with SATA cables and move my files over?

Solution
You can. Make sure you have your current drive set as your primary boot device as sometimes a new drive being added in can shuffle the boot priority depending on sata placement.

When you try to copy the files, you will probably need to wait a while for the drive to catalog everything when accessing the user document folders.
