my mum currently has an old laptop with only a HDD on it that has about 800Gb worth of data, and the OS is in there. I recently got her a new machine, which has an empty HDD bay in it, as well as a small 256Gb SSD for the OS. Can I simply install the HDD in her new machine to get her all the data on it, or will having 2 OS installations mess with stuff? looking for a "no future tinkering" solution, as my mum has no idea about tech and I wouldn´t really consider myself that handy with software stuff either

Use the old laptop to pull down any information you wish to keep from the HDD to external storage, cloud, whatever. I wouldn't really recommend putting a drive with OS on it into a 'foreign' system. Aside from that, SSD are really inexpensive and won't be as slow for access as the HDD.

If I bought a new sata SSD for the new laptop, could I connect both systems with either a USB o Internet cable to make transfering everything she wants to keep easier?

Ideally, you'd connect both to the same router, and then FIle Sharing in Windows.

But an easier option would be a simple flash drive.
Copy from the old system to the flash drive, and then from the flash drive to the relevant location in the new system.

Buy a 2Tb hard drive and install in moms new laptop. Don't forget to format the new drive.

Remove her old laptops hard drive and put into an external hard drive caddy.

Off her old drive now move her wanted files from the external caddy to her new 2Tb second drive in her new laptop.

When done KEEP her original old laptops hard drive as a backup in a safe place if ever needed.
