Installing Linux & How to boot question.

Wanting to give Linux a shot, bit of a newbie, and I want to run Linux on a system I'm going to build and want to know 2 things: 1) Do I need an OS installed prior to installing and loading/booting Linux and 2) How would I go about loading/booting Linux if I don't have an OS installed.
