You pay Microsoft quite a lot of money for the MS Office package and get about eight other utilities as well as Word.

Alternatively, you go to http://www.openoffice.org and download OpenOffice toally free of charge (unless you choose to donate) and that has all the functionality of the Microsoft product and will work with existing files created in MS Office.
