I have an Asus X550LA with 4GB of built in ram, a dual-core i-5 with hyper-threading and an Intel HD 4400 graphics card. My problem is this, I got a free corsair vengeance 8GB DIMM 204-pin memory card and installed it in my laptop. It supposedly supports up to 12GB ram, but is not detecting the new memory so I can't use it. I am running a 64-bit vesion of windows. Please Help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

From what I can find it is. My only problem is I am getting conflicting messages on what the maximum ram is, either 8 or 12. If it is 8, is there a way to disable the built in and use the memory in the expansion slot?

So if my system is not recognizing it, what is the problem and is there a way to fix it?

hi, have you found any solution? i'm having your same problem, i added 8 gb in the free ram slot, but windows8.1 doesn't recognize it, the same happens with 2 gb, both ram cards have the same frequency of the one already mounted (and welded) to the mainboard

I had the same issue on this very laptop model. It failed to recognize a brand new 4GB RAM module from Kingston, this was perfectly working on my lenovo laptop. If you notice the upgrade options on crucial.com all of them are 8GB RAMs. http://www.crucial.com/usa/en/compatible-upgrade-for/ASUS/x550la Finally installed an 8GB module and it worked. Hope this helps.

Did anyone find a way to get it to see a 4GB module? I have run into the samething. Is an 8GB module the answer? I mean those that went 8GB, are 12GB total now right?

Nevermind... I found out myself. For those of you wanting to upgrade memory.. I recommend at least an 8GB module from Crucial as they were not selling or recommending any below 8GB. Laptop sees all 12 GB now. Do not order it from Amazon b/c more than likely you will be returning it.

Untrue. I ordered an 8GB module from Crucial and it sees the 4GB on the board and the 8GB for a total of 12GB. I had originally ordered a 4GB module from Amazon and it would not see it. Crucial is pretty good at backing up their product.

So I m not sure where you get info on a total of 8GB on these laptops?

Does new RAM have 1,35V of voltage? Or 1,5V? I think in your laptop need to use DDR3L (not DDR3), so you need to check which voltage of RAM you have now.

DDR3L has lower operating voltage than DDR3, you might have installed a DDR3 module instead of a DDR3L. DDR3 modules are not compatible with Asus X550LA only the DDR3L modules are.

It would appear that no one here in this thread, took the time to open up this laptop. There are 2 slots on this model(Only 1 is accessible by user without voiding warranty), and 1 pre soldered, Your max is 12 gb. This includes the 4gb soldered. With that being said you would require 4gb x2 ddr3l ram. Happy Hunting.
