installing os on intel optane

Hi
I'm planning on installing my Win 10 operating system on an intel Optane 32g memory stick as its almost as fast as ram and is non volatile.

Would you say this is a good idea?

My rig is mostly for everyday use but I sometimes do video editing with Adobe AE & PR and I do need reliable storage and performance

I do also own a Samsung 960 NVMe drive but I'm planning on using it to accelerate my WD Blue 1TB HDD.

Although I'm not sure whether the Optane drive would be reliable, I have heard of some peaple using it as a storage device

Any comments would be much appreciated, thanks in advance😀

P.S. Is there any possibility that I would be able to raid the 2 Optane drives?

Can you install Windows on Optane? Yes. Is it good idea? No, especially since you have 960. Generally, Optane is only useful for systems without SSD, once you have SSD there is not much sense using Optane.
Finally, as far as I recall from Tom's tests on Optane, they were able to link 3 Optane, although I'm not sure they used Raid or other method. Search the Tom's article base and you should find that article they tested this option.

Idk how to tag you guys so ill just hope u see this..

@Skynetrising
Would I be able to use optane on a non window drive? Ive heard its not possible.. thanks for the answer anyway though

@DRagor
Would the 960 be as fast as the Optane memory used as primary storage?
Its just that Ive heard the Optane's speed is basically in the realms of RAM so I thought Id might as well make use of it

Thanks guys for your answers

Officially, Optane only works for boot drive, not for storage drives. I guess it could be possible to make sort of cache for storage drive, but you would have to research if it is possible and how to do that.

In some scenarios, Optane + HDD is indeed faster then NVMe drive like 960 - but in typical home use, you will not see any noticeable difference. Loading time faster by split of a second - not worth the hassle of using Optane.

DRagor is correct, as of right now Optane only works on the boot drive. I looked into this when i built my new system as i wanted to run Optane on my 6TB drive. Since i installed a 960 NVMe drive there was no use of a Optane cache drive for it.

Optane can install only on boot drive....

Actually Intel has updated this and you can now use Optane on secondary drives. When it first came out you could only use optane on the OS drive, about a year ago they changed it with system requirements.

The answers here should recognize that optane is a memory / caching device, not a drive in any sense. The question reads like, " Can you install windows on a DDR 4 module ? " Well, no. You do not install an OS on any memory module.

There are intel ssds with the same memory. Here is one "Intel Optane 480GB 900P AIC PCIe 4.0, 20nm, 3D XPoint" .

An Intel FAQ says

" During Intel Optane memory set-up, should I install the operating system on the SATA drive or the Intel Optane memory module?

You should always install the operating system on the SATA drive you're accelerating. The Intel Optane memory module is completely erased when enabled for system acceleration. It can only set up on a system with the OS installed on the SATA drive."
