Hello.

I was wondering if there are any repercussions i should consider when installing an old M.2 ssd into my new computer since it hasn’t been wiped clean and has windows and some other stuff on it.
Also, my motherboard (Asus prime z370p) manual says “When a device in SATA mode is installed on the M.2_1 socket, SATA_1 port cannot be used.” I should still be able to use another port right? Thanks :)

the problem here windows usually begs to be reinstalled when there are a large amount of hardware changes. so it's better to do a clean install.

the ports sharing you mentioned means a m2 drive in sata mode will steal the first normal sata port. all others will work ok.

Thank you. Would I need to plug the ssd into another computer to do a clean install or can I do that in bios? Also, I don’t have a license key as the license is shared with HP. Will that be a problem? Sorry if I sound stupid, I’m not the biggest tech expert :S

depends on the license...

maybe i missunderstood, you're trying to replace your boot drive, right?

in that case from the old installstion prep a usb windows install drive - there's a tool from microsoft to do it.

make a list of the programs you're gonna reinstall, backup anything important! and unplug the old ssd/hdd.

plug in the new one, boot from the usb you made, install windows on the new drive, set everything up - if the key is on the system the install will automatically detect and use it.

once all done, plug the old drive back in and copy any othrr files or programs, but make sure it boots from the new one and the old is kept just for storage/backps etc. once you re sure you have everything you can remove the old windows from the old drive. and of course you can continue using both.

Yeah well I’m trying to install a boot drive. The License key is non-transferable cause i bought as a package deal from HP which is why I hoped I could just plug in the ssd to my new Pc since it doesn’t have a boot drive installed, only storage .
Another problem is that the old computer that I knicked the ssd from is a laptop in which the battery is faulty and can’t charge while turned on, and I’m worried that it can’t keep a charge for that long. Is there another way to do this?
