The power adapter of my Western Digital Elements 320gb external hard drive had died. From the multiple sources I read this is apparently a very common problem. I need to access the content of the drive. I have read that we can open the enclosure, and remove the drive itself and connect it just like an internal drive in a PC. Has anyone done it? What cables and connectors would I need?

Welcome to the forums!

If the drive inside is PATA, you will need a ribbon cable from your motherboard and a molex adapter from your power supply. You will also need to check the jumper settings for the drive: master/slave.
If the drive inside is SATA which I doubt, you will need a SATA cable and power connector from your power supply.
