Installing win 7 on XP

Let me know how to install window 7 on XP machine without loosing existing programs

NO can do. Best you can do is create a dual boot system. Windows 7 upgrade will only do that when upgrading from vista. XP upgrade will do a "Clean" install.

Installing Windows 7 over top of XP can only be done via a migration install. Migration installs will backup specific bits of data and then perform a clean install of Windows 7, moving the previously saved data to a folder on your hard drive called Windows.old. There is no way to save application installs when moving from XP to 7. You will have to reinstall any software you had on the machine before.
