I plan to install and beta test Windows 10 as I want to experience it, and want to know whether it is best to go down the VM route or install it natively on my second hard drive.

Just don't want Windows 10 to corrupt my main and primary drive where I have Windows 7 installed on. I have read that certain builds of Windows 10 have caused disk drives to become corrupt, and of course don't want my main OS drive with Win 7 on to get corrupted.

You can remove the main drive while installing Win 10, then reattach it. At restart you'd use F8 or BIOS for selecting the bootable drive.
I know how to dual boot and install windows 10 on my second drive; just don't want anything funky to happen to my main Win 7 drive as I install Win 10 on my second drive or use it to beta test the OS.
