Installing windows upgrade via hard drive connected via SATA PCI card

I'm running Vista from the internal hard drive but want to upgrade to Windows 7. I have an additional SATA hard drive connected via a PCI SATA expansion card onto which I would like to install the new copy of Windows 7, but am concerned that the card may be too slow to run Windows efficiently.
When I tried connecting the new hard drive to the motherboard (I swapped it for the DVD drive and connected the DVD to the PCI card) the computer wouldn't boot up, so have given up with that idea!

It's entirely possible that the card isn't bootable. I see two approaches
1) Tell us what the controller card is and what pieces are in the computer, or its original make and model
or
2) Anything with Vista is so old that you are better off getting a new machine.

what is the make & model# of the computer or motherboard to see what you have? how much ram is in the computer?
