Will this processor work well with a gtx 960 4gb v card? was planining to upgrade from a AMD Athlon X4 740 3.2GHz Quad-Core Processor. only reason I want to upgrade is that the processor I have says that it only has 2 cores and 4 logical processors. (i just want something cheap that would work with my card and has 4 cores/is from intel) Honestly though, I have no idea if this processor would work with my motherboard. would be cool to find out what kind I have without opening the case. (device manager didn't tell much, either) welp. hope you guys can help with this dilema. I hardly know anything about building pc's, but I do know how to install parts.

Solution
Your current X4-740 has a passmark rating of 3842, and a single thread rating of 1282.
You could buy a A10-6800K for about $115. It has a passmark rating of 4909 and a single thread rating of 1545.
Most games will depend on the single thread rating for performance.
That is about as well as you can do without changing out both your motherboard and your cpu.

By comparison, the cheapest budget skylake processor, the $60 G4400 has a passmark rating of 3842 and a single thread rating of 1869.
A $125 i3-6100 which is an excellent mid range gaming cpu has a passmark rating of 5500 and a single thread rating of 2102.
Amd and intel use different motherboards so no intel cpu will work with your existing motherboard. It will work fine with a gtx 960, though depending where you live and the pricing the 4590 is a bit faster and only a few dollars more. Your athlon is still a quadcore, it's the way windows sees it. It consists of 2 modules, each module has 2 cores. Those cores within the modules share more resources (cache and things) than the cores of intel cpu's.

Basically something like this.

Your current cpu has 2 cores, but 4 threads.
It is not the fastest for gaming, but there is no reason why adding a GTX960 would not work.
Go ahead and try it.
If your cpu becomes a limiter, then explore a Intel change.

If you need a better gaming cpu, there are not any really good cpu upgrades that will run on your FM2 motherboard.

This changes a lot then. I'm on a tight budget and I heard that intel processors are good. but if I would need to change my motherboard as well, then a amd would suffice. any suggestions, or i would need to open a new question?
