As much as everyone hates on "phablets" I think that Intel is absolutely right. Why would the AVERAGE person need a $400-1000 PC to play Angry Birds & browse the web? The majority of people WILL be switching over (somewhat slowly) & its not going to reverse.

Sure, if tablets can give me 8TB of mirrored storage, I'll be on board. Until then it's a useful device when I'm out but it will definitely not even come close to replace my PC.

I can't dropbox 600GB of home media and I'm certainly not trusting it on a device with only one drive in it. God forbid a flash based one.

The most I can see happening is using a tablet around the house, a next gen console for gaming and my PC will still be humming away in the background, keeping my digital world from falling apart.

because most people are paying 600-800$ for those tablets, when a 300$ or less pc could do the trick?

i really see the pc going tablet as some point, but not the way they are thinking.

look at the wiiu tablet. its just a screen and inputs. i see that as the future of tablets. a pc and multiple displays like this hooked into it, and all transmitted wirelessly. and some of the higher end models having a cpu for limited mobile functionality.

i see that as a realistic future.

get 1 1000-2000$ base station (pc tower) and 100-200$ screens for it. it would honestly be cheaper than now.

think of it.
you have the pc for the person who wants to sit at it.
you have the tablet for the person who hates pcs (my mom in this example)
you have a laptop (tablet with a keyboard) for the person who types allot
and you have stand alone bigger monitors for the person who doesnt want to have the tower, but likes the feel of the pc.

there, 600$ laptop, 700$ tablet, 800$ pc, and 1200$ pc, all added up to 3300$ when you could get 1 uber computer for 2000$ and serve the 3 lesser for 1-300 a pop. all coming in at cheaper than my current household.

and here is the thing. that tablet never leaves the house. not once has it ever been outside.

[citation][nom]hasten[/nom]BF3 Multiplayer can stress my i5 2500k even when I have it up at 5ghz. BF3's nearly a year and a half old. When progress gets stagnant we all lose. Focusing on the tablet business is a major loss for all enthusiasts. Hopefully AMD can survive a handful of years and give us another k8 type release...[/citation]
What graphics configuration are you running? Battlefield 3 is very GPU dependent and it's 64-player multiplayer scales with the number of cores/threads. A 2500K is still more than sufficient for recent games and the architecture (Sandy Bridge) scales all the way up to their flagship 3970X. Also, keep in mind that the 2500K is an i5, their mid-range desktop processor. They have a whole lineup of i7's that offer more performance and even have 2011/X79 if you need more than that.

Intel's developments with their architecture and die shrinks have given them a powerhouse combo of speed and low power consumption. AMD's FX 8350 has nearly the same TDP as Intel's 3960X, yet nobody would ever bother to compare the two. They would compare the 8350 and Intel's 3570K, a 77W chip. And most gamers wouldn't even bother recommending the 8350 over the 3570K because the 3570K can be upgraded to an i7 model later on if needed while the 3850 is already the fastest AMD has to offer.

Intel doesn't have to sacrifice performance to lower the power consumption of their chips. They plowed billions into R&D in 2012 in an effort to refine the chip architectures for their Core and Atom lineups in order to deliver more and more performance while dropping power consumption as low as the single digits. Everyone is complaining that tablets suck and will never compete with desktops. That's true, they never will. I won't ever have a tablet replace my desktop either. But in a year or two when you can run an Atom with the same performance as today's i3's in a smartphone and go all day without plugging in, you'll appreciate the work Intel has done.

The PC will die when we all have Ghost In The Shell style cyber implants and can simply play all the games within our own heads. Intel's success seems to have gone to their head(s), because they honestly believe that something is just because they say so.

And for the record, Tablet sales are so damn high (in my opinion) because there is no future for an old tablet. You can't upgrade the hardware, everyone is a slave to marketing and wants the latest and greatest gadget. PC Gamers and enthusiasts don't buy new computers because we know how to run our rigs into the ground before we full on replace them.

In summary, Intel, please shut the f*ck up, you ignorance is astounding. Go shout at your Ultrabooks... "Internet! Find me porn!"

Well I can remember taking typing classes in middle school when the personal computer was in its infancy and most households and many businesses didn't have them (read: Intel 80286 and Apple II). I remember our teacher back then regurgitating all the hype back in the early 80s of how the desktop computer would transform households and offices around the globe into "paperless" environments. We all can see how well that forecast turned out...about as successful as those people in the 1960s who said we'd all have flying cars in our garages by the year 2000.

In any event, the only thing that will kill the PC is the consumer and their preferences. If PC sales continue on a progressive decline for tablets and other instant access fingertip convenient hardware (including smart phones), then obviously that is where the manufacturers will ultimately go. Like it or not, we PC gamers and home PC builders/enthusiasts are less than 2% of the overall Intel and AMD consumers. However, I do not foresee businesses giving up their PCs & laptops and giving their employees tablets in their place.

They deliberately hold back performance on their processors just because they don't have any competition from amd offering only 5-10% performance increase compared to the last gen and now they are saying the pc industry is going down because of tablets.. this is almost like ms trying to force its crappy os on customers.. i'm hoping that amd will come up with something better than intel in terms of performance and value in the coming years..

Who wants to sit in front of a 10" screen and knock out productivity work for 8 hours a day? No I think there will always be a need for a large monitor and full keyboard and mouse.

Intel wants the Personal Computer to be more personal. You can use it while shitting, while in the crowded public transportation, while parachuting, scuba diving, etc, the application is endless.

The title should be: "Intel Would Like You To Believe That The PC is Undergoing Transition to a Tablet", AKA , "We have a lot of Atom chips that need to be sold!"

There are some monstrous levels of stupidity going on here. Why and how Intel is able to achieve them goes beyond me. I know about 50 people who own PCs. Out of them a few have tablets and most have smartphones. Not a single one is replacing their PC with either or both of these portable devices. That would be madness. Instead they are using the portables to take some small part of their PC experience on the road. That's what people are doing.

Decreased PC sales are a normal consequence of the PC maturing as a platform and the market adapting, shifting towards balance and efficiency as upgrade cycles become longer. The PC is now the most powerful, adaptive, and efficient computing platform out there. In their immense stupidity Intel is ignoring this fact. Why? I don't know. More on why the PC still rules the coop here: http://saysthemagpie.com/the-desktop-pc-today-death-of-a-legend/

when someone fits a mobile GPU to a tablet and runs a full version of windows/linux/osx then ill be interested in them. Until then im happy playing with ITX. ITX is the future.

They are out of touch. There are just some times when you want to use your other hand for something other than holding your tablet. And other times when you need a 40inch screen. And other times when you need to feel your keyboard keys. And other times when you just need the precision of a mouse. And other times when you want 5.1 surround sound. And other times when you need a DVD player. And other times when you need a USB hub. And other times when you need to connect multiple USB3 devices that use more power than your tablet can supply. And other times when you need to plug in a game controller. And other times when you need 2 terrabytes of harddrive space. And other times when you need a CPU running at 4Ghz that used 150-200w of power. And other times when you need a Raid controller. And other times when you need a normal version of windows. And other times when you need to capture masses of data. And other times when you need to connect through a network cable to other computers. And other times when you need 16GB of RAM. Etc... Etc...

Get real Intel.

Agree, once the smartphone and tablet market stablilizes and becomes like the pc market where your lucky if you get x2 the performance every 3 years the tablet market will at that point be saturated and the consumer will stop buying tablets just like the current pc's cause there just isnt much difference to justify the price anymore. They will wakeup then i supose.

What? Did anyone even read what Otellini said? He simply said that you'll see more convertibles, that'll blur the line between ultrabooks and tablets. Do you think he doesn't know the difference b/w a desktop and a tablet? He's not Tim Cook, nor (thankfully) another Zak Islam.

Why is everyone up in arms about that? They're not going to kill their core business! Calm down people.

Ultrabooks will compete with tablets, full notebooks/desktops won't.

Tablets will not work in the Work environment for Most Companies. too many restrictions for upgrades and repairs.
Also won't work in my house as there is not enough power in them to run my two gaming machines and not enough storage for the things I need...
Stop looking at... Fads... and niches.

Yep. Normal Joe Smith can do allmost anything he wants to do with tablet or phablet. We who actully work, or play, or use computer to something else that reguires real power are very small minority. All the rumours that that talks about soldered CPUs, new windows version and sale numbers are shoving that way.

The desktop market is moribund because of the lack of innovation in the product offerings by Intel and other OEMs along with game designers. The only segment coming out with improving products are the video card OEMs. I've got a 2700k running at 4.8ghz overclock. Why would I update for anything less than a CPU with 4ghz base, 4.8 turbo and overclocking to 5.5-6ghz? Take the worthless Intel graphics off the CPU for desktops. Increase the band width to 30GBs. Memory type to DDR3 2400 not 1600. OEM video cards should be modified to accept the contained liquid coolers like the H80 or Kuhler 620 instead of air coolers and fans. When RAM is at 2133, why are Video cards struggling with 1600? A 1200mhz core clock GPU when the low end CPUs are at least 2ghz?
