Intel core 2due E6300 Overclock?

Hello, I've read here that the Intel core 2 duo E6300 is very easely overclockable Cpu with low risk of damage.

Since my Pc is working with a E6300 I wanted to ask you for your opinion weather I should overclock it or not.

You have to know that my Pc is already more than 2 years old and that I want to use it for at least 1.5 years more main use is gaming.

My power supply unit started burning 1 month ago so I have a new one now, but don't want to increase Voltage to much because I don't want it to burn again.

Up to now I didn't overclock any part of my pc. I don't have any overclocking experiences

Info about my System:

Mainboard: ASUSTeKComputer INC. p5b
Bios: American megatrends inc. version: 0701 (10/2/06)

Cpu: Intel core 2 duo E6300

Ram: Kingston ValueRAM, 2x2GB Kit, DDR2-800, CL5 brandnew

(Graphic card: Geforce 7900 gs don't want to overclock the graphic card).

Yes, OCing can help your gaming experience, and keep your system capable for a bit longer.

That board does have some OC features. I'd start with updating the BIOS.

BIOS updates sometimes open up new features and sometimes increase OC stabilities.
Make sure that it is the correct P5B version, they have a deluxe and wifi versions.

If you have money, invest in a aftermarket cooler. The stock cooler can only take you so far.

I don't want to buy any new components, just bought the new ram don't want to invest more for a 2 year old system.

I downloaded a file called p5b-Asus-2100.rom. It should update my bios, but how do I use this file?

another question, how strongly should I overclock my cpu, again I don't like big risks and I want to use the pc for more then 1.5 years longer? Is 2.5 ghz to much?

Your manual should have instructions on how to update the BIOS. Mostly older system boards will need to use a floppy drive and diskette.

If updating the BIOS is a challenge, then you shouldn't do it. There are chances that something can go wrong.

Because your processor has a 7 cpu multi, you are most likely looking at around a 2.4 - 2.5ghz max OC.

I read some part of the guide you gave me an have to admit that it is to complicated for me, I know at least I can't just overclock the Cpu by changing the Fsb with some proggram as I imagined it .

The thing with the ratios confused me most.

If I have ddr2-800 ram how far should I increase the Fsb of the E6300 so that they match? wat's the difference between a 1:1 ratio and a 2:3 oder 4:5 in terms of performance?

Is there any easyer guide for overclocking your cpu?

I searched for an easyer way to overclock my system, so I asked my favorite shoko bair (he wants me to call him so in this post -.-) and he adviced me to go onto the Asustec site and look for programs matching my demand.

So I did, and found the program: asus Al suite

The proggram has automatic overclocking functions wich didn't work at all.
The good thing about it is, that I could change The Fsb of the cpu the Voltage of the ram and the ram frequency(with the intergratad tool al booster).

Because I read pretty much about the connection between Fsb and Ram, I increased the Fsb to 330 and lowered the ram frequency to 667 (thoght it would give a Ratio of ap. 1:1).

Without complicated Bios changes for me to do, the pc restarted and is now overclocked.

Info by core temp: Core 0 and 1 46*C after a short time of testing (before 36)
I think these numbers are to low, the Bios was telling some higher number however I don't think the temperature is dangerous.

didn't test the system for a long time but gave it a short stress test in a game and the performance was good.

did I do the right thing? are there any dangers (to high voltages or so)

Great job. Forgot about Asus AI suite.

You can download Prime95 v.25.8 To test for stability. It's free.

Download your OS version. When you start Prime95, cancel the inital torture test, go to Advanced and make sure "Round off checking" is checked. This will tell Prime to stop and tell you it found an error.

Run Small FTT to test CPU. Run Blend to test overall system.

To check wether the voltage increased or not I made a screenshot of cpu-z, core temp and speed fan and set the system to default again(my overclocked settings are saved and will be apllied later on)

The core voltage changed from 1.144(normal) to 1.38(overclocked) which seems to high, al suite doesn't offer a cpu voltage changing system so I think I'll have to go to the bios -.- or not?


some other strange things:

speed fan showed(overclocked):

GPU:52 (flame symbol)
cpu: 49 (increasing)
Aux: 127C (flame symbol)
core0: 44C
core1: 44C
Core: 52 (flame symbol)

the funny thing is that when I'm in the not overclocked state the three numbers with flame symbol are nearly the same so are they undangerous?

The only thing that's strange is that the Cpu temp inc. to 49C(overclocked) and the core temps stay at 43C

which temp is dangerous for the cpu?
how can I lower the voltage of the cpu?
Up to what frequency should I put my cheap kingston ddr2-800 ram?(normal 400Mhz after overclock 418 (already to much?))

Can I put the ram Voltage on 1.80 in overclocked mode although the ram has to "work more" then usual?
how can I control the Voltage the ram has?

I've reckognized that my ram still were at ddr2-667
put them to the normal ddr2-800 and core Voltage increased to 1.288 Volt.
I'm very confused now because I don't see why the core increases voltage when I increse ram frequency.

and something I forgot to ask:

was it intelligent to put the ram frequency down to ddr2-667 when I first tried overclocking?

If I increase Fsb to 400, what ram frequency should I put in?

Ok i've informed my self the last few houers and use the Bios now.

I've set core voltage to 1.20V, 333fbs ddr-667 1:1

system looks stable, will make stress test with your pogramm this night if everything works good I will try Fsb 400 ddr2-800 what would be great if it worked.

Speed fan shows: Core temp 55C Gpu 55C
but the two cores have a temp of ap.40C although overclocked.

How high can I push the core and gpu temp without danger?

Yes, lowering your RAM to 667mhz is the smart thing to do. 60-70% of the posts about overclocking problems is because folks forget to lower they memory frequency and end up overclocking their memory to the point where it crashes.

Using speedfan to meausure temps is trickier then say something like Real Temp or Core Temp. You have to calibrate Speedfan so it doesn't give you the flame. I'm not an expert at Speedfan, I've only tried it briefly and found that Real Temp worked better for my cpu.

Ah k, the next step would be 400fsb ddr2-800

I thought that 2329 Mhz were enough because speedfan gave these strange results with flames and numbers for Cpu and core that even reached 70C once.

But Core temp always stayed at 45-48 degrees(core 0 and 1), it even does so while stress testing with prime 95.

Are the Core0 and 1 temperatures from Core temp enough ore do I need some other programs?

Because 45C aren't that much, I could try and overclock further.

Different temp measuring software will give different reading, base on your TJ Max setting. The most accurate way is to calibrate your software so it is as close to accurate as possible.

Download Real Temp 2.7 or beta 2.9. Use the Sensor test. You may have stucked sensors.

I was playing today with 2.38 ghz and it works perfectly don't need to overclock further (at least at the moment) thanks for your help I'll leave my system like this for some months.

I don't really know why, but i had to overclock further.

My problem is that I can't change the fsb in the Bios anymore. No idea how this ist possible.

When I enter advanced Bios options I can change the Vcore the fsb voltage the ram frequency and everything else but I CANT CHANGE the Fsb to a higher/lower number.

I think it could be because of the Asus al suite which i had deinstalled.

However if I want to overclock i have to use some stupid software with which I can't change the voltages and fsb at a time, so I need get this problem fixed to be able to enjoy overclocking.
