I ordered and sent back 2 motherboards that came with the wrong processor socket for this CPU. The last one was LGA-1150. I don't know if I ordered the wrong thing, or they sent me the wrong thing. I would sell it, but I don't have any way to test it. It has been in a drawer so long I don't know where I got it. So, what is the right socket for this CPU? I don't want to order the wrong thing again. I have assembled many computers at the job I just retired from, but most of those were older computers. I believe it needs an LGA-1155, but not sure anymore.

The Core i7-3770K is Ivy Bridge (Intel 3rd gen). Both Sandy Bridge (Intel 2nd gen) and Ivy Bridge (Intel 3rd gen) run on 1155 socket motherboards.

I'd had a Core i7-3770K myself and was able to overclock it to 5 GHz with Corsair H110 water cooling. I ran it on an ASUS P8Z77-M or M Pro and afterward on an ASUS P8Z77-V PRO (both LGA1155 motherboards). This CPU might be old but it would get the job done today for anything (incl, animation and gaming) if you're ready to spend some time on not too enthusiast animations and keep reasonable settings within the gaming world. Day-to-day tasks like hosting a server on Linux or browsing the Internet and writing documents on Word or PowerPoint or Excel would be a walk in the park for this CPU.

LGA 1155, you also need to watchout for chipset and bios compatibility. You'll want one of these chipsets to be sure it'll work without requiring a BIOS update, B75 Q75 Q77 C216 H77 Z75 Z77.
