Intel Core i3, i5, i7 in a DG965RY Desktop boards

I have a custom built 5 yr old computer with a E4400-2.0 GHz Intel Core2 Duo on a Intel DG965RY mother-board. I've recently started the upgrading process first with my GPU frtom a Saphire ATI Radeon X1650 PRO 512MB to a EVGA GeForce GTX 560 2GB, and raised my DDR2 RAM from 2- 1GB sticks to 3- 2BG sticks but settled to use only 4 GB until I can somehow improve system performance on my brand new x64 Windows 7 OC, which performs too slow at this time. I also brought a new hard drive where Win7 x64 was installed, but currently still using my x86 Windows XP until I've installed all my MSTS stuff and other important programs onto the new system.

When I was st "Best Buy" the sales-rep told me that I could upgrade my CPU to one of the Core i3, or i5 CPUs and maybe even a i7. But I felt I better get other opinions before spending that kind of money, since Intel.com does not mention anything about support for those CPUs with my board.

Can I use one of these i-core CPUs with my DG965RY?

Here's the compatibility list http://processormatch.intel.com/CompDB/SearchResult.aspx?BoardName=DG965RY but no, no "i" CPU's are compatible with that mobo, or on LGA 775 period, for that matter.

your motherboard supports lga775 cpus. core i series (nehalem and sb/ivb cpus) cpus support lga 1156 and 1155 cpus. the internal architecture, socket pin count etc. are vastly different in core i cpus, that's why they won't fit your current motherboard.
i think the rep assumed you already knew that buying a core i series cpu would mean you'll have to change your cpu as well as your motherboard (may be psu, too). core i5 2400, 2500k or i7 2600k would certainly provide higher performance, but using them would require you to buy a motherboard compatible with those cpus. check intel's site for motherboards and chipsets compatible with core i cpus.

5 years is usually past the point of reasonable upgradability. Your DG965RY board doesn't even support the 45nm Pentium E6xxx series, which would have been quite a decent upgrade.

Core ix series processors are entirely out of the question, they are a completely different CPU socket!!!

The best option for u wud have been to sell off ur entire old system and start with a fresh new LGA 1155 build 😀 its a little late now thoe, that extra RAM u got is probably DDR2 so it won't work with the new system 🙁
