Going back to my main point though, we know that AMD is making "enough" of a profit off of the 5600X with street pricing at $315. So I still think its reasonable a 5950X would be making a good enough profit at $400. Just not as much as AMD would prefer.
AMD was still making a profit selling Ryzen 3600X for $130 or so before the shortages went in full force and Zen 3 chiplets aren't much larger so the effective cost should be only marginally higher. AMD is laughing all the way to the bank at current CPU prices with $100-150 higher gross profit margin even on its lowest-end SKUs.

I don't think DDR4 is going to hamper AL much.

Benchmarks showed up on PugetBench - note that the Alder Lake 12700K is running DDR4-3200 and being compared to the fastest scores on PugetBench for the other chips. This is certainly not going to be the fastest 12700K ever, yet it trades blows with a 5950X.

Leaked Microcenter pricing for 12700K / 12900K were 469.99 and 669.99 Methinks street price will need to drop prices a solid $100 on 5900X and 5950X.

"Here's how that compares to the fastest scores from other CPUs within PugetBench's database...
  • Ryzen 9 5950X: 1,581
  • Leaked Core i9-12900K: 1,575
  • Leaked Core i7-12700K: 1,565
  • Core i7-11900K: 1,548
  • Core i7-11700K: 1,477"

I don't think AMD would lose money if they sold a 5950X at $400. They would just make way less profit.
The cost to manufacture a CPU is a lot closer to $50 than it is to $500.

But, of course, they're always going to make the most money that they possibly can
But they can't just hand someone $50 (or 150-200) and get a sellable product, they have to buy a bunch of wafers all at once, pay for a bunch of packaging at once and pay for all of the storage, handling and whatever else there is.
If all of that is more money than what they will make with a product that will most probably lose a lot of demand then they will lose money and they would rather put that money to the v-cache CPUs or the next gen.

Well that doesn't seem right... the 12900k has 4 e cores more, there should be some difference there.

Yep but the 12900K bench was apparently done using DDR5 😆

Hopefully the shipping products will be as impressive as the leaks. If so, I may have to upgrade, just because. Getting 5950X ish performance from a $470 chip is sick, especially given what 5950X was selling for up until March or so of this year.

Release this CPU already. I need a new space heater. Winter is coming.
Then why would you wait for this one? With 20% better single and 50% better multi there is way way way less need to overclock and even if overclocked it will run way below its maximum much more often so it's going to be a terribad space heater.

Go with a rocket lake or earlier, those you will have to overclock much more and are going to run much closer to maximum burning much more power.

It was also run with a different version of After Effects. 18.1x38 for the 12700K, 18.4.1x4 for the 12900K. Looking at some other results on pugetbench, 18.4.1 scores are lower than 18.1 even when the 18.4.1 system has the same or better specs.

Which is one of the many reasons that no one should be drawing conclusions based on leaks.
