Intel core i5 6500 or i3 6100?

i am debating between the i5 6500 and the i3 6100. it is my first build and i am looking to play games like league of legends. my budget is very tight 400-500. just would like opinions if the i3 is a good option?

I asked a similar question yesterday and wasn't satisfied with the answers I got - too many just say get an i5. According to Steam Hardware reports, 49% of all users have dual core CPUs and 45% have quad core. Two years ago actually had LESS dualcores by a small percent (like 1.5%). I realize Steam isn't the only source of games, but gives a good idea. I don't see devs suddenly ignoring the larger piece of the pie by locking people out of games by requiring four physical cores. Given 6100 & 6500 are both Skylake, I reckon the i3 does a little better in single and two threaded tasks. I was ready to lay down the extra money for the 6500, but I think I've changed my mind to the i3.

(Note: It doesn't say if steams 2 CPU list is two physical cores or two threads. Maybe someone else can let us know since that could really change things if the 49% is limited to two threads)

I just built a LoL pc for my brother and I chose an I3 6100. You do not need 4 cores

Yeah but in your question you were referring to how the I3 would handle things 6-7 years down the road. Of course, paired with a 750Ti, the I3 is a smarter option now, but down the road games will be utilizing more cores, possibly 6 or 8 normally. In those situations, the I3 will struggle significantly compared to the I5.

The i3 is an amazing CPU.There is no game to my knowledge it won't play, including GTA V, which recommends using quad cores.

the i3 6100 is probably one of the best bang for buck cpu's intel have ever made in all honesty.
on a $400-500 budget you cant afford an i5,its as simple as that.

This and get a good power supply so u don't need to replace it if u want a new gpu.

only happens when you dont expect it - in your case your cx may possibly last forever 😉
