intel core i7 3770k or 4790k. Is it worth the $350-450 full upgrade from my FX-8320 4.0Ghz?

Iv been contimplating lately on whether to upgrade or not. I know they are superb processors and while iv got cash to burn i want to build the ultimate computer.
I say $350-450 because ill need a new MOBO along with the new CPU.

Id say it aint worth it, unless you switch to x99 build 5820k.

fx 8320 oc still very capable of maxing most every game out there 60+ Frames
and the oc, you should be able to get a lot more out of that cpu.

Also NOTE that dx12 will probally further the life of your cpu, as newer games using this api should be less dependent on cpu. And it should also make it easier for developers to take advantage of 8threads, though that doesnt guarntee it will happen any time soon.

If you absolutley want to make the switch right now, id say just go for the 4790k + decent z97, or Xeon 1231 and pro4 h97 for much cheaper, yet very similar performance.

Depending on the gpu you have now, you would probally see a better increase in performance upgrading that, however just around the corner is amd's 300 series (not their rebrands on oems)

My full specs right now are these

CPU: AMD FX-8320 4.0Ghz

MOBO: Asrock 970 Extreme2 r2.0

RAM: 8GB G.Skill Ares Series

GPU: Sapphire r9 280x Tri-x OC Edition 3GB

Im in a sense trying to future proof my rig while i can. Im upgrading to a new MOBO soon so i can slap another Tri-x in my rig and im upgrading to 16GB RAM also because i do some editing and other things besides gaming. A Liquid CPU cooler is in the works also so ill have that soon here

Im upgrading the MOBO to a new one soon if i dont go intel but it seems to me maybe i dont need to. Iv been looking up motherboards a lot lately and i think i can get a decent MSI one but i want a yellow one but they are so damn hard to find unless you are rolling intel and have a Z board

I have my answer now :) i guess ill hold off then. I mean i love this CPU and GPU but im just trying to get every ounce i can out of this thing ya know? when i can ill up my OC to 4.4 and see where i stand. Lets just say i go from the base 4.0Ghz to 4.4 with a decent board how much performance gain do you think ill see?

Ahhhh actually i was going to get an SSD this thursday. They have good deals on 240GB SSD right now and i really only want to put my OS and a few programs on it. Eventually ill add another 3 SSD to my rig because iv got space for 4 and 2 3TB hard drives

Id leave the liquid cooling mate & buy a raijintek Pallas for that board as it has no vrm cooling - the Pallas cools everything within 2 inch of the cpu socket so is a good choice.

There is barely any performance hit with crossfire on a 16/4 x configuration - disregard what anyone else says.

I have you have a good PSU - a good 750w is pretty much the minimum for that configuration.

What performance hit will i take though? i heard that it will kill my performance. Is this from experience or did you read it from a site? thats not supposed to sound dickish either lol just trying to figure things out :)

Yeah i just put a 1000 Watt in last night 😉

i was going to get the Swiftech H240-X 90.0 CFM Liquid CPU Cooler but they upped the price to $170 so thats a no go i think so i want to get the Thermaltake Water 3.0 Ultimate 99.0 CFM Liquid CPU Cooler or maybe a decent Corsair one but i hear the fans are prety loud on them and im trying to color scheme as best i can. so im trying to stick around black, white and yellow

Between 5 & 10% depending on game - nothing more though.
Using 2 x crossfire bridges between cards means 90% of the bandwidth is passed through the first 16x slot.

Something like furmark which relies on pure graphical grunt will double frames completely.

Heaven & valley I got pretty much 180-185% with cf as opposed to a single card - that's on 16/4 & is good enough for me.

Ill post my firestrije score when I log onto my main PC - was around the 11000 mark - not far off people with 990 boards running 16/8 & 8/8

970 is in my htpc paired with an over clocked 6300.

The 280x cf is in my 8320 rig upstairs - its really a video encoding rig but I was offered 2x Asus direct cu II cards for £95 each ,been used in a bitcoin rig for a couple of months & couldn't turn them down 😉

Thats a steal of a deal even if they were used for bitcoin. Thats had kinda caught my interest also actually. How do you like your 6300? i was looking at getting my brother one as a small upgrade over his 4130
Im glad i can expect about the same or close to performance. Do you have the tri-x or another 280x version?
and what games do you play about what are the frames?

The 6300 does the job at 1080p 60htz - started as a htpc & casual gaming rig & ended up my most used machine - had a 280x in it originally but it ran too hot in the small case - hence the 970 which I bought for lower temps.
It'll pretty much max anything at 60 fps while staying around 60c.

280x rig doesnt get much use - 1440p 60fps not really a problem for it though.
Benchmark wise its pulls 20-25% more performance than the 970von everything I've tested which puts it above a gtx 980.

I take the key word is "ultimate computer"
if you want to sli or tri sli or even 4way sli. go for the intel i7.
just forget about the i5.
the price of video card will drop soon. the next gen video card is coming out in summer? every time something new come up the price of the old will drop.
so i would wait a bit for the video card.

but what is wrong with your rig now?
are you experiencing lag in games? "since you are thinking of sli"
if you are not. just hope you know you won't be able to tell the different with the upgrade
a non lag computer with up grade you will still get a non lag computer nothing more.

and by the way. the FreeSync Monitor is somthing to look into as well.

If im going to be above the 980 then i am a very happy camper lol. im playing everything on 1920x1080p right now and i get pretty much ultra everything but i found a couple games i still need to turn the settings down a little bit for like Ryse: Son Of Rome but thats like turning down MSAA and Blur but nothing more.

Honestly there really isnt anything wrong with it at all. I get good FPS on games and rarely see any lag at all ofany sort im just trying to max out the capabilities of it but after all the talk i think ill stick the the 8320 and just upgrade a few things. Its my first PC build and i plan on it being my only one for some time while adding new parts here and there of course. I was going to just buy a 1920x1080p monitor because i have been using my 720p tv. I dont want to spend a whole bunch on a screen though

I just read a few pages on DX12 and it seriously sounds amazing. Now im all excited all over again.
