Hi ive recently tried upgrading my Dell optiplex 780 MT from a core2 duo e7500 to a core2 quad q9400, Once i put the cpu in i turned on the computer, it turned on but didn't post, it had a blank screen with the power LED amber instead of green, and diagnostic lights number 2,3 and 4 flashing in sync. I am extremely confused right now because ive read many forums and sites saying that the q9400 was one of the best cpus to upgrade to from a core2 duo in an optiplex 780 MT. plus many support sites including dells site to CONFIRM that the 780 would in fact support the cpu, socket and form factor wise. but right now my 780 MT shows me that it doesn't. Any info on this matter would be very helpful.

Put your E7500 back in and check your bios version. If it's not the latest one, update it.

Next, I notice the 9400 has a 1333mhz fsb, while the e7500 has a 1066mhz fsb. It could be you need to boot to bios and manually set this up after installing the Q9400.

Lastly, how do you know the Q9400 works? Have you tested it in another system?

I dont know for sure as a just got it from ebay, but as i turn the pc on with the cpu in, and no heatsink (i dont keep it on for more than 10 seconds without the heatsink) the cpu gets hot, very quick. so is that a probable way of knowing it works? Also, the way it boots up is that 1. i turn on the power supply 2. the fan waits 5 seconds to spin up , then it does (normally it spins up immediately) 3. the power light stays solid amber as diagnostic lights 2, 3 and 4 blink on and off in sync at an interval of 1 second 4. it restarts after 10 or so seconds and does the same thing, but this time, the pc stays on.and doesnt restart, keep in mind that with all this going on, there is NO video, so i cannot get to the bios either

Well i have BIOS A15 installed, the latest bios that is on dells website, but it doesn't work anyway, plus my pc shows diagnostic lights wise that theres a problem with a USB device, when thats definitely not the case here, when its the CPU thats not working

Ive tried resetting it many times i gave up when i left the jumper in cmos reset and the power unplugged overnight, and it still didnt budge.
Perhaps it might be the motherboard, there are two types, one that only supports dual cores, and one that supports both dual and quad cores, and im afraid i may have the first one.
