Laptop or desktop? I have an HD 4000 on both. The desktop is a 3770k and the laptop is a 3210m. The desktop has 16 GB RAM and I can set the HD 4000 VRAM to 1 GB. The laptop has 8 GB and can only go to 512 MB. The stock VRAM is 64 MB. Games can barely run with only 64 MB dedicated to the HD 4000. But, even at 512 MB, I can play almost every game out in 720p and at least low detail. Most games are medium (the defaults of most games; I rarely have to turn anything down). For example, one of the most demanding games, Far Cry 3, runs better than it does on the Xbox 360 on my laptop in the default settings in 1366x768. The same is true for other triple-A titles such as Battlefield 3, Call of Duty Black Ops, The Batman games, GTA IV, Borderlands 1 & 2, Crysis series, Bioshock series, etc. It is a very capable and underrated GPU. Just make sure the motherboard allows adjustment of the VRAM. My laptop needed a BIOS update to allow me to change it. And, make sure the drivers are updated. Download them directly from the Intel driver website. The drivers that download automatically are usually not the latest. Also, your total DDR3 system RAM determines how much you can set aside for the VRAM. If you only have 4 GB or less, you might be limited to 512 MB or less.
